Is it normal to listen to classical music?

I like to listen to classical music. Not only does listening to it give me a historical background for where the music of today came from, but it also sounds really nice; it's really sophisticated and structured in a way that today's modern music is not. It makes me feel smarter when I listen to it. I've started to choose favorites; my favorite era is the Baroque Era, some of my favorite composers are Bach, Händel, Schubert, Chopín. Interestingly, I dislike the French Impressionist movement starting around beginning of the 20th century, and it's composers such as Debussy and Ravel. It's not that I don't like it, it's just that I don't find it pleasurable to listen to.
I invite others to share their opinions. :)

Classical is great, but it's incorrect to say that modern music doesn't have the same sophistication, technicality, or structure. Most of it doesn't, but jazz and progressive rock for example are just as, if not more sophisticated than quite a lot of classical.

I'm rather fond of Chopin and Dvorak...

  • Sure it's normal. Music is enjoyable regardless of what century or what style it is.

there's a reason classical music has stayed around so long.

    Because it's good.

Why the fuck do you think it was made? "Makes me smarter"... Even if that was remotely possible (other than 'feeling' smarter), no.

Yep, I'm going to agree with you and most of the people who have commented.

I'm not big on Classical music and such, but within my music library contains some Beethoven and some Mozart compositions. I WILL listen to it frequently, and it's very relaxing and soothing. My friends sometimes question me as to why I listen to it. I tell them that it's a change from all the music that is being put out these days.

I don't know much about the composers like you do poster, but I'm really glad someone out there detests modern music and appreciates the REAL oldies, haha.

No music helps me concentrate on some task or project like classical music. I've even heard that listening to Mozart will help your mathematical abilities.

It's nice to hear someone other than myself mention Chopin. I think he is a genius who is often overlooked. Your tastes are very similar to mine. I hate Ravel and I can't work out if I like Debussy or not. Sometimes I think I do, but he always goes off on one. Like Miles Davis. Some people get it, but I just don't.

Oh, and I always think Chopin fans fall into two camps. The etudes, nocturnes, preludes people and then those who like mazurkas, polonaises, scherzos. I'm the former. Finally, if you haven't already heard much Massenet, he could be worth a listen for you as we share similar tastes and I think he's just great.

People listen to it all the time without really being aware. But I think it's pretty great.

Have you seen this video? Pachelbel's Rant.
