Is it normal to like to drink insanely expensive liquor?

I love to drink high-end liquor ($200-$700 a bottle price range typically). I enjoy the connection it gives me to the craft of making liquor. I guess I feel like I'm tasting what liquor is MEANT to be. I'm tasting 'art'. I just truly enjoy the experience!

I'm a really frugal person so it's sort of weird! The price on a bottle of liquor NEVER makes me say 'whoa, no way'...I'll always consider it and I'm never shocked by prices. I do drink plain old average liquor and beer most of the time (I'm not some kind of a booze snob!) but I usually have a bottle or 2 of some amazing liquor at home.

is it normal to love pricey liquor? I can't find any friends who share this 'hobby'!

Go for it, there are WAY more expensive hobbies. Just make sure you aren't spending money for the sake of spending money. Like obviously a $10 bottle is no comparison to a $200 bottle. But is there really that much difference between say a $500 bottle and a $700 bottle?

Ooh, I'm jealous. :P I think the most expesnive thing I ever drank was Absinthe, and not the real kind but the Absente shit.

If I weren't a broke college kid I would love to keep some fancy liquor around for special occasions, but I'll definitely check out some of the things you mentioned, especially the tequila. :D

I like Jose Quevo and Mezcal, but my taste in tequila is more expensive than other alcohols. It's the only thing I can't drink bottom shelf of without gagging.

Hello, I do like drinking good liquor. I try to get Absolut Vodka instead of other Vodkas sometimes, but jeez I can't afford it all the time! (and yeah, for me, absolut vodka is the good vodka lol, it might be shit for you)
A friend of mine was once invited to drink a $500 vodka in Dubai. He said he was too wasted to notice if it was really good or not though....

    • Try a brand of vodka called Sobieski, it's cheap ($10 for 750 ml) but doesn't taste cheap. I'd highly recommend it! Absolut is overrated. Sobieski has that quality taste like Grey Goose or Belvedere but is significantly cheaper.

I think it's neat that you appreciate alcohol like this. If I had money to spend, I'd definitely want to experience the expensive brands. How do they compare to cheaper alcohols?

    • You can taste the craft and art, you get to experience what liquor is all about. It's a great experience!

There's ways to experience it on a cheaper scale to get an idea of it. Look for 'special reserve' or 'single barrel' liquors in your liquor store. Jameson 12 or 18, or Jack Daniel's Single Barrel are good places to start. They'd run about $50 a bottle for the Jack and around $50 for the Jameson 12 up to $90 or so for the 18. Single barrel means the liquor came from 1 single barrel that the makers deemed exceptional (the generic Jack Daniel's is a combo of many, many different barrels mixed together for consistency of the product), Jameson 12 or 18 means it's been aged 12 or 18 years.

Don Julio is a great tequila to try if you get the chance, it ranges from $60 up to $500 or so for commercially available bottles.

      For rum, check out Pyrat.

I will definitely check those out next time I head to the liquor store!

What exactly does it being from one barrel do for the taste?

        • It'll be a much darker color, more rich all around and you'll really notice the flavors that the barrel lends to the whiskey as it ages. It has a subtle sweetness and a bit of smokiness and a great aroma. The selected barrels represent the true character of the brand. I guess you could say a bottle of single barrel is like the original artwork and the regular Jack is like a not so good xerox of it, if that makes sense!
