1940's Films tell men to "fight" for the one they love. You did not say you "love" him so I would just say no and keep moving forward. He had his chance and perhaps said "no" to you long ago because he did not truely love you, but know, after time, and realizing he can do no better or has been rejected by the "one" he really wanted, now comes to you as a 2nd choice! No. I would say no. Elapsed Time has a way of placing the male ego in check; what they want, and what they can't have. Say yes if you can stomach being a 2nd choice.

If he's been that persistent, I think he at least deserves a chance. But I think you should explain to him that you're afraid of getting hurt before you do give him that chance.
