This is my favourite post of the day. Not only did the OP mention two bands that are from my city, everyone replying has mentioned songs that I love. I have more depressing songs than I can mention and I'm going to have a bit of a review of them before I repost and name them.
I think the most depressing song on my playlist is "Her Song" by Carter USM, about a little girl who is murdered and dumped in the River Trent:
And that was how the story went
They found her face down in the Trent
Battered, broken, bruised and bent
I guess God gave her up for Lent
In a similar vein, Morrissey's "Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowning":
The sky became
Marked with stars
As an outstretched arm
Slowly disappears
Or Suzanne Vega's "Luka" about domestic violence:
I guess I'd like
To be alone
With nothing broken
Nothing thrown
Then there's Eleanor Rigby:
Eleanor Rigby, died in the church
And was buried along with her name
Nobody came
Father McKenzie, wiping the dirt
From his hands as he walks from the grave
No one was saved
And "I'm Cold" by Whale, a song about a girl slipping away after a fatal car crash:
I see a man that's crying,
I'm cold and probably I'm trying.
My hair's a mess,
And I'm wondering if its nice to die.
Also, "My Lover's Box" by Garbage, "Jesus Don't Want Me For a Sunbeam" by Nirvana, "Fade Into You" by Mazzy Star, "Trailer Trash" by Modest Mouse, "Just" and "My Iron Lung" by Radiohead, "Caroline Says II" by Lou Reed, "Gloomy Sunday" by Billie Holliday (a song so sad it's apparently caused people to commit suicide) and "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley.
I love Tears for Fears! And yes I think it's definitely normal because giving into 'depression music' can feel so fulfilling lol. I've noticed a consistency of male artists in my library. I've always thought of it as a filling spot of a male figure for me that can express feelings I find hard to do myself. Some specific bands and songs are:
Radiohead-No Surprises, Scatterbrain, Reckoner, Sail To The Moon, Punchup at a wedding(i love the ending!!)
Death Cab For Cutie-Transatlanticism, Title&Registration, A Lack Of Color, Summer Skin, Passenger Seat
Arcade Fire-Neon Bible, My Body Is A Cage, Neighborhood#1, Rebellion
Third Eye Blind- Background, Alright Caroline(youtube), God of Wine
Nick Drake's Fruit Tree, listen to this, It's kinda sad, and I think it sounds lovely.

Placebo, The Cure and David Bowie are artists u might like. The Cure - Cold and Placebo (ft david bowie) - without you I'm nothing, or Placebo - Because I want You (especially the piano version, u can find it on youtube) are incredibly sad.
I like this kind of music although I'm quite normal. Maybe a bit introvert, but not depressed. I think it's just a way to cope with my sadness (like a broken heart).
That's ok radar I was joking too just if you saw me you would probably be shocked especially with the posts I've commented on
Thanks guys and I am not depressed
Oh and I hate Gary jules version of mad world the original is better
i've created a playlist of sad songs which i titled the "the king of sorrow" after a song by sade. no way i can list all of them, but it contains:
hurt · nine inch nails
sombra de ti · shakira
wonderwall · ryan adams
bizarre love triange · frente
mi mancherai · josh groban
evaporated · ben folds
and of course gary jule's cover of mad world
i love tears for fears too. i actually think suffer the children is a sad song. even though the tempo is upbeat, the lyrical content is pretty tragic.
These days I tend to listen to more upbeat music, but anyway here are some 'songs to commit suicide to' (just kidding): The Doors: Severed Garden, Billie Holiday: Don't explain, for self-pity: Deep Purple: when a blind man cries, Amy Winehouse: Back to Black and the one that always gets me - Janis Joplin: Summertime.
I like songs like that too because they always get me thinking.
I love mad world: Gary Jules*. And I like Cary Brothers: Loneliest girl in the world, and belong. I like Pink Floyd: comfortably numb*, and wish you were here*, Tony Rich Project: Nobody Knows, Dead Heart Bloom: Letter to the world*, Gary Allan: Best I ever had, Kenneth Thordal: Maybe I'm dead*, Stephen Bishop: On and on*, Sara Evans: My heart can't tell you no, Radiohead: how to disappear completely*, and Karma police, Avril Lavigne: how does it feel, The who: Behind blue eyes*, John Lennon: Imagine*, and Love*, Jason Walker: Down, Bruce Springsteen: secret garden*... some of those songs don't really make me sad, but make me think. I don't know, theres a lot more, obviously. I just can't think of them all right now. haha Oh yeah, and I got excited listing songs, and I put stars next to the ones I like the most.
Me too, I love pretty much anything new wave. Check out The Cure, Depeche Mode, Visage, Gary Numan and Japan for starters.
I love Joy Division, though I don't think all their songs are depressing.
Who's a homo radar? Me? Really?might want to see what I look like first before you decide that!
