Is it normal to lie about what you saw?

Okay, so I have this habit which technically involves lying. Whenever an event happens, even if I've witnessed it, I'll say I didn't see it. For instance, if I saw someone get punched or something funny happened, my friend will turn to me and say "Did you see that?!" and I'll usually always say "No."

However, the reason I do this is because I want to know how other people perceived the event that just happened and I don't want my own interpretation to skew theirs. So, I'll say I didn't see something just for the sake of finding out how others see it, then I compare my own opinions to theirs. Does anyone else do this?

I love playing dumb. This way nobody expects anything out of you.

Are you sure it's not that you're afraid your opinion will differ from theirs? I mean... are you really that influential? You should give them a chance to do the same sometimes - give your thoughts first, before they have a chance to be skewed by theirs'. It does make sense to me to do this occasionally, since many people (including myself sometimes) have a fear of their opinions being rejected or denigrated.

I do it sometimes, but not all the time as I don't always care how the other person saw it.

Kind of like an on-going undercover psychology experiment. I can imagine the results would be interesting.
