Is it normal to lie & keep secrets from your parents?

I have a girlfriend who my parents have forbidden me being with. Is it normal for me to see her and keep it a secret from them?
For the record, I am 18 and in college... My parents are paying a portion but not all of my college expenses.

Oh man, you're such a rebel!

Next, you'll be buying your first box of condoms without their permission.

  • Anybody who tells you that you are 18 and an adult and can do what you want blah blah are most likely still kids themselves.

The law may view you as an adult at 18, but you are definitely not an adult at that age. Unless you are supporting yourself totally and completely self-sufficient. Being in college and still living at home which I am assuming you are tells me you arent self sufficient.

If they are paying a portion of college and supporting you otherwise you should respect them enough to be open about the relationship and what it means to you.

Well you are 18 so they can't say shit. However lies are not a good thing. But it is your life and they can't tell you how to live it anymore.

They can offer advice but they can't order you around.

You're 18 and should be aloud to love who you want.

Why don't you love her in secret? Your parents would still pay for the college and you could be with the one you love.

Some parents are controlling. Sometimes, it's because of social status and sometimes it's not. A good example is the original Arthur film. Dudley Moore is rich and falls in love with Liza Minnelli. His family catches wind of it and threatens to cut him off if he continues to see her. Later, he finally decides not to give a fuck and marries her anyway. He gets cut off, but at least he did it for love.

    Good Luck!

It is normal, I do it all the time! Just realize that since you are now 18, your parents don't really have a say in the matter anymore. Once you turn 18, you are now considered an adult. But just realize that your parents will eventually find out. Yes they may be a little angry but they will eventually understand.

If you are 18, you are an adult and should be able to make these decisions yourself. That being said, a relationship is always better if those that are close to you, ie family, friends, are in concurrence.
If there is a dispute, the best thing to do is to talk it over with the disputee(s).
