Is it normal to laugh at sad movies?

Whenever I go to (or see on TV) a sad or romantic movie, I always end up laughing. It drives people around me insane, but it seems the more serious things get (like if someone dies...) the more I laugh about it. I want to change but I just can't. Sometimes the things are so ridiculous that I can't help it, like during really cheesy romantic scenes in, say, the notebook.
Also, I always laugh when batman first speaks in "The Dark Knight" and when Harvey Dent yells "SAY IT!!" in the hospital.
Is this normal?

You seem, to me, to get embarrassed at public displays of intense emotion. Maybee you find it hard to feel, or say these things to others that you love or whatever so it would be normal to NOT have normal reactions to something you find hard to be/do/act yourself.

  • In Inception, when she jumps and he yells "NO MAL JESUS CHRIST" I am in HISTERICS. I went and saw it 3 times (Excellent, Brilliant movie) and every time I just couldn't stop laughing. My friends who were all crying got really mad at me.
(P.S. Sorry if I gave a spoiler there for those who haven't seen it...)

  • I'm guilty of this, too. Some people do it because they can't handle serious situations. Others laugh, 'cause, well, they just thought it was a funny, a ridiculously "cheesy" moment, like you said. Personally I plead the second one. Regardless, it's pretty normal. Just refrain from laughing too much and ruining the movie. Other prudes might not understand your humor.

I do sometimes if it's a really cheezy quote, or certain actors are in the movie...Good eg;Arnold Schwarzenegger, or Tom Cruise...Can't take the damn men seriously. As for pissing off your friends, out of respect, if you really must, walk out of the room, or altogether, don't watch a serious movie with your buddies...Watch comedies ;) They tend to be much more inviting anyways... Good luck mate.

i laugh when people get shot on films and stuff like that, its nothing to worry about its just a film. i dont get scared at horror movies or anything like that because its just a film. things that are on a television dont feel real or anything like that, its all just a made up story, and even the films made on real events dont feel real. its perfectly normal not to feel sad at a film due to the lack of reality.

Very normal. You are probably just seeing through all the contrivance of the production to a bunch of actors reading their lines for money, but taking it oh-so-seriously. What's not to laugh about?

Your companions make take this stuff more seriously though, so they have every right to be upset. Respect their feelings and you won't get badgered.
