Is it normal to just want to write ?

All I have ever wanted to do is write. I have never had any interest in doing anything else. Sometimes I wish I could have always wanted to be a car mechanic, a plumber or a teacher. Trust me to want to write! It is what I live for, nothing else. I do work as well but I am determined to become a published writer. How normal is this ? I mean most people I know are either happy to do a more mundane job or are happy to work in a shop or office. I have always had this urge to do something different and special. To write.

Damn, you people are self righteous. Do you really need to post something like this to make yourself feel better? If you're so special just do it, regardless of what people think.

"I have always had this urge to do something different and special"

You are certainly guilty of hubris.

I'm a professional writer and I've got to tell you, getting published isn't that difficult. Most nonprofit/charity organizations welcome volunteers to assist with writing press releases. Yes, you'll probably see lots of edits on your copy, but most press releases get published. It's a great way to start seeing your work out there, and will also help tide you over until you land that dream job. Just remember to be realistic and set small goals at first. Blogging is another great way to keep writing. Good luck!

I never ever wanted to be a teacher. Never. However, I wanted to be an artist. Any kind of artist, but especially an illustrator. After going to college and having to get a string of awful jobs to pay those student loans, teaching didn't sound so bad so I went back for my Education credits to supplement my B.A. in Fine Art. Now I teach art and my schedule is awesome because I paint more now that I have in like, 8 years. I have time to do illustrations for book companies and create designs for stationary. I love it. However, I read a great article about a woman who was a writer and worked her way thru college and grad school as a waitress. After graduation, she kept her waitress job until a friend suggested she teach at a college. She became a professor of creative writing at a high profile school and didn't feel happy. She never had time to write because of grading papers and she didn't like helping OTHER people become better writers when writing was all she really wanted to do. Another writer she knew was working a grocery store and told the professor she should get a job there because she had a lot of time off to go on her book tours, got good benefits for working part time, and had an easy and relaxing job with food discounts. The professor traded her big job for a little clerk position as a shelf stocker and was happier than ever.

I too have had this urge ever since I can remember. I used to pour my wild imagination into essays at school, and usually got top marks. Then in high school, a friend and I challenged each other to each write a short story, admittedly is was a smooshy romance - Mills & Boon style, but what more could you expect of a couple of teenage girls. Anyway, when we'd completed our stories over the weekend, we swapped them and were both very surprised at how good they were. Definate potential. The urge to write has never left me, although all these years I have felt blocked when I sit down to start a story. I have lots of amazing ideas that I store on my hard drive, and some have been there for 6 years. Then one day, I was in the mood and read one of those ideas then just began to write and so far it's flowing. I don't know if I'll ever make it to being published, but I have nothing to lose in trying, and if you don't try you'll never know. So, I strongly encourage you to stop dreaming and go for it. I usually write late at night when everyone is sleeping, that is when I'm at my most creative. Find your time of day that works for you and try to write at least 1 hr a day - you will probably find that you end up writing for more, because once you start you lose track of time. If you want to be inspired, then take a look around you at the human race and their kooky ways, also, draw on all your experience in life, because there is probably a wealth of information stored up in your brain. GO FOR IT and make yourself proud.

Being a writer is something special, story tellers have existed since the dawn of time and always held a special place in their tribe or community. I hold my favorite authors in the highest esteem - being Dean Koontz and Stephen King - I regard them as being more talented than any of my favorite actors. If you consider it, what would actors be without the writers?

I say hold true to your dream and join the age old community of scribes!

Yeah you're totally normal! You're just lucky you know your calling in life. Some people never know for sure, but it sounds like you do. I feel kinda the same. I think my calling is music. I love to compose and I'd hope to be writting for movies or something one day.

    But anyways, good luck! :)

That's fantastic. I have always enjoyed drawing but recently I haven't been able to focus on it and I feel like I will never become an artist as I have always dreamed of becoming.

It's good to hear that you have more dedication to your calling than I do...
