Is it normal to judge someones gender on the length of their hair?

Some people are very traditional and base peoples gender on the length of their hair. They believe without a doubt anyone with short hair must be a boy and any with long are a girl. What do you think of these age old hair standards? Should your changing your hair mean you have to change your gender?

There are females here with short hair (hey, kelili) and there are males with longer hair (hey, dom). It suits them both and I don't think either need to change their gender. I'm hopeful that we're less caught up now in gender as a whole and are starting to just treat each other as people.

Hmm, it makes sense to me that kelili would have short hair, for some reason. I'm considering a pixie cut, myself.

I think you could probably pull off a pixie cut. Although then you won't be in Eastenders any more. :/

Haha, I probably won't actually do it. I have really soft hair, and I need something to play with without reaching up. Also, I want to dip dye it. I'm thinking maybe teal or purple. I wonder if I could pull off multiple colours (it's a bit harder to do, since you have to make sure the colours don't bleed into each other).

You could definitely pull off multiple colours or dip-dying. I know it sounds kind of weird but I think you could pull off a much lighter colour as a dip. I know a lot of people will disagree but I think this girl's hair is just great:

Not sure you could get away with something quite that light, but a henna red might look nice.

Eee, cute! They have ombre box dye, now. I wonder how well it works. I used to have bubblegum pink tips that were fun. I also used to dye my hair completely red with henna.

I'm such a sucker for bright, unnatural, candy like colours, though. Look at this gorgeous nonsense:

This has always bothered me. Traditional? Whose tradition? It's not like this is true for all men, in all places, through all of time. People are so judgemental.

    • Cultural and family tradition. Not saying I agree either but that how it goes to most people I know.

That would not fly here in California.

However (yes, crucify me dear people of IIN), if the guy had long hair that is better maintained than that of your average female, he has it dip dyed with funky colors, it wearing eye-liner and sister jeans and has his nails painted, I can't help but think he might be a little feminine.

    • No I mean hair alone. Not eyeliner just long hair.

        I'm aware of that.
Yes, a lot of people judge gender based on hair length, though. But usually, on a Professional level, it is deemed as unprofessional.

        • So women wearing a suit and short hair should never get a job? Since that is unprofessional? All women are required to have long hair in order to a get a job?

What's wrong with being feminine? (not trying to start a fight or anything)

...I don't know, you tell me. I didn't say that there was anything wrong with being feminine. If there is, let me hear it.

        • So you agree all girl with short hair want to be boys and all boys with long hair want to be girls?

          Comment Hidden ( show )
  • NotFloydzie

My mother thinks this way. She thinks every guy with long hair is feminine and every girl who has short hair wants to be a man. Of course, I disagree. Changing your hair shouldn't mean anything. They're dead cells.

    Hmmm.

Let's direct anyone to either screamo singers (mostly long-haired guys or to any of the female Hollywood celebrities with short hair.

Even kids do it. One time when I was younger I had shorter hair and this douchy little brat did that whole "are you a boy or a girl" thing. Some kids need to be smacked :/ I don't think hair length determines gender. I do however, feel like there isn't a whole lot that seperates males and females in appearance (Sometimes.) So it can be a little hard to differentiate if they aren't making an effort to expose their more "feminine" traits

The pant suit, chop cut look is a handsome look on a woman if you want that.
