Is it normal to ignore homeless people?

Is it normal to ignore homeless people? I understand people who are down on their luck- I've even know a few people who ended up homeless for awhile. I know the difference between someone trying to better themselves and someone who's given up and wants a handout. When I see the same homeless guy sitting in front of a 711 every single day, and they ask me for change every time and say something nasty to me because I ignore them, it really pisses me off. Why don't they go to a shelter and try to get a job? I'm in my early 20's. Doesn't this 40+ year old man feel ashamed asking some kid for cash? It really disgusts me.

I see both sides of it. Neither side understands the mentality of the other.

the spare change they scrape together 99% of the time goes to beer, bcuz there are churches and soup kitchens that give food.

If you want to give something to support people trying to improve their lives, give to a homeless persons charity, not to the individual.

I've had a homeless person come to my workplace and ask me for money; we where doing construction outside. I told him to come back at dinner time and I would by him as much food has he wanted at the Tim Horton down the street. He never showed up.

I've been broke and out of luck and never bummed any money from strangers. I think it's a habit more than a need. Gives them something to do. It's like this guy who was always hanging around Tims and asking for change for a coffee; like if it's a necessity.

  • I don't give them money because I don't want them to go use it for drinking or drugs. If the homeless person says it's for food and I'm not busy, I just go with them and pay them a burger or something like that.

    • My friend and I were approached at the beach once by a homeless guy who asked for beer money, and his finishing line was "hey, at least I'm being honest! He he." That kind of thing really pisses me off. If someone was just hungry I'd totally buy them food, no problem. I could never ignore someone who's hungry. But you want money from me so you can go get wasted? F*** off and get a job.

There are many homeless near my office. They all have a different reason for finding themselves in that situation. Drugs, mental illness, debt, choice, a failed system, or just bad luck. Not all of them are bad people. Sometimes I give money, food, hugs, or company. And sometimes I tell them off and sometimes I ignore them. They are just people.
