Is it normal to hold your breath when passing certain people?

I hold my breath when I am walking past old, ugly or disgusting looking people or combinations of the three. Is this normal? I don't wish them any harm, I just don't want to breathe the same air as them.

I think I really only do this if, in the time it takes me to pass by them, they've been acting like they are sick.

I do this all the time but I have guilt about it. But as soon as I see someone scetchy(looks gross ugly sloppy sweaty stinky or look like their a hazard to my healthy) my mind goes into panic mode and locks down. I do t like gasp fresh air before they walk by I just draw in a good breath and let it out slowly as they pass, looking at the ground the whole time. It's sad and I don't like that I do it but I can't help it. Also when i was younger I was terrified of people with missing body parts. I would have a panic attack and start to cry. I felt bad... by what could I do? On the flip side if I think someone will smell good I'll draw in slowly as they pass. Like a hyper sense of smell. Normally I'm right.

I think its normal, beacause if you suspect that person has disease its prob natures way of protecting you from germs, as a lot of colds/ flu germs are transmitted in air droplets that the person might cough or sneeze out. I think its instinct....

  • oh my god! I used to do the same thing! I got over it around the age of 12 though, I thought it was weird so I just stopped(it was hard though) every once in a while I catch myself doing it but it's not AS bad any more

Does the concept of plants constantly recycling air, giving us fresh oxygen and other important gases mean nothing to you? I won't breathe in the same air if I don't breathe near them. Air is not finite.

Yes it's normal. Everyone except those who have not thought of it or those who stink so bad that they don't know better do it. I usually don't pre-judge though. It takes a whiff first, then my lungs go on lockdown.

I mean people who are unnecessarily ugly, like obviously haven't taken care of themselves and and have let themselves go. @theguruofthesauce you've got the rightish idea.

    @ at the crumpetraiser

Just how ugly are we talking? I mean in the course of the day I encounter many people that would never make on reality tv, they just look plain, have a questionable hair cut, etc. It would much more that lack of physical attractiveness to make me think someone was diseased or smelly. And while that kind of behavior is not exactly the same as racism its not much better.

Yes notanicegirl you are beginning to understand why I used race. It's one of those things you can't choose like being ugly or getting old. I've met young people that didn't seem to smell until I got within their stink radius and I've met a beautiful woman that smelled like a mixture of rotted fish moth balls and puke, truly awful.

Someone that looked disgusting such as someone with sweat stains, rotted teeth, mated greasy hair with wrinkled clothing, that's covered in puke or blood would appear to me as someone to avoid. Probably the guy from Texas chainsaw massacre would give you an idea

Judging people on how they look in terms of attractiveness is not the same as racism. And it may be unkind but I cannot help it.

Why would you add race into it? I don't discriminate people by the colour of their skin or their beliefs. I merely mean someone who may stink or be ugly whatever their ethnicity. And by not wanting to breathe the same air as them I just mean I don't want to find out too late whether their disease is contagious or not.

But why would add 'ugliness' into this? Judging a person by their physical attractiveness is similar to judging a person by their race. Ridiculous and unkind of you.

@Sauce I said IF you think then stink, ie are dirty and appear unkempt. I don't know about others but a bad body smell makes me gag and makes me uncomfortable. Holding my breath would be a inconspicuous way to increase my own comfort. Its never normal to think you are better than someone else as in "don't want to breath the same air" the very notion is so asinine I simply ignored it and assumed he did not mean it the way it sounded. Its called the High Road, perhaps you should look into next time before letting your perceptions and personal prejudices get the better of you .

I would its normal if you suspect they may stink

I'm not racist... But me too.

I've had a bad experience, only once. But it's just a precaution that I take now. Only African American males. It's actually quite terrifying.

its normal if they stink it is not if you hold your breathe if that person is ugly or old, color of there skin if your still do this i hope you hold your breathe to where you pass out an learn your lesson to not be a douche bag
