Is it normal to hold my own hand?

I hold my own hand a lot these days because it doesn't feel like it's mine. I don't know why it doesn't feel like it's my hand anymore. It used to. It has touch perception still but it feels like it belongs to someone else. This is hard to explain. I hope someone reads this and can relate.

  • No matter what, your hand is always your own. Remember that.

    • This is one of those problems you may want to discuss with a medical doctor. There's a chance you may have neurological issue. By the way, I'm not a doctor.

      • Yeah I think I have a brain problem. I'm the same guy who wrote 'I think I died 6 yrs ago', 'I like to smell dead things' and I had another story called 'I'm trying to pickle myself' which didn't get approved sadly. It was about how I consume a lot of things I think will keep me preserved.

I'm afraid to talk to a doctor because I don't want to get locked down in the booby hatch.

I had the same thing going on for me when I had schizophrenia. This definately sounds like some sort of psychosis, but with persistance and the right meds, you can have a body of your own.

    • What do they do to you if you may be schizoprenic? I am scared to see someone about this because I don't want to get locked up or have things taken away from me...like my license or my guns.

Well, I don't know about every countries laws, but where I live, in the USA Schizophrenics cannot be involuntarily committed to a mental institution unless they have committed a crime and used the insanity defense. They also can't take away your guns. If you have schizophrenia, or any related disorder you get to choose to see a therapist and a psychiatrist. You can talk to the therapist about your problems, and a psychiatrist can write for medications. The therapy can be useful, but the most useful thing is the medications. In the USA it is illegal to take away any of a persons rights due to mental illness, and it is illegal for employers to discriminate against them if they can still do their jobs.

        • Alright. I'm in the US too. So...will I get put on some kind of list or in some system? Would social services get involved? Could I be mandated to take medications? I'm highly concerned for my privacy and freedom. I'd like to be aware of any and all potential consequences.

You might be put in to a medical database, but they aren't allowed to do that without asking you, and you have the option to decline. You can never be mandated to take medications, but keep in mind that if you have been on one for a long time, and wish to stop taking it, you should ask your doctor for dosing instructions as it can be dangerous to not go off slowly, depending on the medication. You're psychological state can not be talked about by your doctor to any other person, and is protected by something similar to attorney client privilege. If a doctor shares information about a patient, they will have their medical license taken away. Also Social services will not get involved unless you want them to. I personally don't have much money, so I use a doctor working with the department of social services that costs less. Sort of like a welfare thing. Once again you are given the right to privacy, and anything said in sessions is confidential.

Alien Hand Syndrome? I think that's what it's called. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien_hand_syndrome

    • That's interesting but I don't think it applies to me. I have control over the hand it just doesn't feel like it's mine.

As I described it to our viking friend above, it's as if it's a very advanced prosthetic. Cyborg like perhaps. It's able to send me touch data (however it's nothing like having a real hand) and it feels like it's of different materials than skin and bone. I can feel the area where my 'fake arm' begins quite distinctly. It's about 5 inches below my elbow. I have all sorts of odd sensation there and below.

I am so tempted to cut it off. I won't do it probably but I can't stop thinking about it. I wonder what it looks like inside. What is it made of?

I wouldn't mind seeing a doctor just to see what they say except I am afraid they might lock me up or take things away from me.

What if you were secretly experimented on and that arm of yours is a high tech craft?

Maybe, you received an arm transplant a long time ago and you were never told about it?

Then again, it could be something neurological or even dietary related, Do you take vitamins or eat a healthy diet? It could even be nerve damaged.

I'd say holding off on the urge to chop it off. Ask a doctor about it but it may be best to keep the dissecting bit to yourself.

        Good Luck.

    • If you're asking if it's due to cutting off the circulation, the answer is no. It doesn't feel like my hand ever. The best way I can describe it is it's like a prosthetic that relays me some touch data somehow.
