Is it normal to hit your partner in your sleep?

I love my partner.
We sleep in a large king size bed.
I generally sleep well, rarely restless.
I'm a non-violent person and always use mediation to overcome problems.
However about once a week, sometimes once a month I dream, about all sorts of things - and lash out - not necessarily at my partner but often hit her (once) in my sleep - and generally wake up at that point to her screams!
The dreams can be all sorts of situations - I might be protecting my partner (in the dream) from a mystical predator and when I lash out at the animal I actually lash out in my sleep - and occassionally hit my partner - sometimes with my hand, sometimes with legs.
We're both worried I may do her some harm.
Is it normal for a man to lash out at his partner unknowingly in his sleep?

You need to go to your doctor and get a referral to a sleep clinic. They will diagnose that you have a sleep disorder and treat you.

    Thanks for the feedback....
I went for over a year without further incident...
But about a month ago I had a dream that I was witnessing a robbery and went to hit the gunman over the head with a torch in my hand (in the dream only) and bashed my partner on the head whilst she slept!!!....then we both woke up!
Unfortunately it hurt my partner - no damage - and no repeats since, but it's a worry!

Maybe you two should solve said problem by sleeping facing apart. It doesn't necessarily need to be unromantic either. You two could lean up against each other.

I overheard my uncle on the phone telling my Mom of a story about how he started grabbing his wife's hair and punching her in her sleep. Apparently he was having a dream where some cult leader was trying to brainwash his family. Only happened once though. I LOL'd

Is it normal to hit your partner when you're awake? I say yes.

I used to kick in my sleep. Once when I was little I was sleeping on the floor with my brother and ran my toenail hard down his leg, from his knee to his ankle, which he bled pretty bad from. When I moved out and in with my boyfriend I stopped kicking and started mumbling occasionally instead. My daily headaches all went away as well. I think my switch was attributed to the massive stress I experienced while living at my parents. Is there something stressing you out?

I would see a doctor about this, before your girlfriend gets a black eye and you get funny looks when you go out, or before your girlfriend stops wanting to sleep with you. I'm sure it's something that can be fixed relatively easy.

it's both normal and not normal. i know my boyfriend talks and gets up in his sleep, he has yet to hit me but i guess it would be possible.
