Is it normal to hijack the word 'gay'?
And if not, why not? It used to mean happy or colorful until homosexuals hijacked it, and its previous meanings were dropped immediately by nearly everyone.
It was re-hijacked and now homosexuals are insulted, but I don't see that they have any complaint because it's the same thing that they did themselves. The new meaning wasn't invented by right wing religion or haters--they couldn't have done as good a job. It was hijacked by teens and the new meaning is now a permanent part of the language.
Example: my neighbors were talking about their co-workers and referred to "gay number seven." He was straight, but he ran machine number seven, and machine number seven never works right.
Like it or not, that's the meaning and it's endured for well over a decade. If it's gay, it doesn't work right. The tide of popular culture and the true opinion of the masses took it there.
