Is it normal to hear static?

Since I was little I've been able to hear static from televisions, especially boxed ones or just plain old ones. Well actually, I dont think it's static, but its just that I dont know what else to call it. The sound is like a really high-pitched peep sound. Kinda like the sound you hear when your ears ring. It's not just televisions, I hear the same noise from cars, those vehicles at airports, and lots of other things. Im 100% sure its not my ears ringing because when i turn off the television or the car/vehicle passes me, it goes away. I always thought this was normal since I`ve been experiencing this since I was little, but everyone around me told me otherwise. My mother thought I was hearing hertz, but I dont think thats the case because there was once a time when there was an old boxed television in my karate classroom, everyone there is either the same age as me or younger, but only I heard the static and it was REALLY loud. It was so loud I couldn't concentrate. Not just that, I have a brother 2 years older than me, but he never had this experience, even though he is always with me when I experience it. Is anybody else out there experiencing the same thing??

Yeah, I hear it a lot when a TV is on ... even if it is far away and i can't hear the actually sound of the current program, I can still hear the high pitched noise.

I hear it too. Mainly from older CRT (Tube) screens.
Some computer power supplies and laptop chargers also give off this sound, but nothing as loud as a tube TV.

I'm guessing you're quite young, because people generally lose the ability to hear extremely high frequency sounds (as is given off by these devices) with age.

I can hear and see all the stuff you describe... some of us are able ti sense a wider range of frequencies.

But If you want a real trick here are some; at night grab a remote. bring the infra-red transmitter up to your eye and use your hand to block out any external light. Now whenever you press a button (more than a second) see if you can spot the transmitter changing color.

here is another, again in the dark. Get big sheets of paper. wait for you eyes to 100% adapt to the darkness and hold the paper in front of you. Now rip it as hard as you can and you'll a spark that follows the line of tearing. I used to use the A4 writing pads I used in college.

Another! If you have a DVD player get video where you know that there will be a scene with total (a lot) of white in it. If you close your eyes and play the DVD, you'll notice the high pitched noise you are sensing becomes stronger the brighter the picture. but It only work for Tube TV's not TFT's and LCD's.

And another! Before you go to bed right after you switch of your TV, you'll notice the screen still glows!

There's more but let me know how these go!

The TV is normal it's to do with the coating... but yours is an LCD I can't think of what could be providing the glow...

You have to try different remotes, some do some don't. But these little effects are everywhere when you take the time to notice ;)

I could be that your ears are extremely sensitive. Mine are too. I can sometimes hear people walking from quite a distance from it. I've always hear sounds coming from the TV, game system or occasionally from my Macbook. I though everyone could hear it.

I can hear it if the tv is running and sometimes I've heard it when it wasn't. I can still hear other things, but it's almost like a background noise. For instance, I'm watching Studio Ghibli and I can hear it. I can still hear the movie, I can hear cars go by, but sometimes it is a matter of concentration. When, I'm typing it's a medium sound that on one hand can block the sound, but if I keep focusing on the noise I can still hear both...

It could be some damage done to your hearing. My grandfather constantly hears a ringing because of working on loud tractors for so long
