Is it normal to hear music in white noise?

I normally sleep with a fan on because I hate sleeping in dead silence. I can't sleep with music on because I'll end up singing every song I know and it keeps me up for hours. When I'm laying there trying to sleep I always hear music, only instrumental. It doesn't happen every night. I found that whenever I turned off my fan, the music stopped, so I can only assume I'm hearing music out of white noise.

It always makes me feel like I'm crazy. Does this happen to anyone else?

I know this is old but maybe it will put new readers minds at ease. It's very common actually and it's called MES...musical ear syndrome.

My family genealogy has a degenerative hearing loss condition so I wouldn’t be surprised if I am afflicted and that is helping me out in this department.

It's probably from hypnagogia. When you're on the edge of sleep you can see and hear things that aren't there as if you were in a dream. As for hearing stuff from the white noise, it's like how sometimes if you fall asleep with the TV on bits that you can hear will get mixed in with your dream. It's a weird brain quirk but nothing to worry about.

I tend to hear rhythmic patterns out of white noise or ambient noise. Not really sure as to why. You should listen to instrumental music if you don't want to sing along to music at night, btw.

  • There is a machine that makes white noise. Therapists use them in their offices to calm their patients. I can imagine a fan would make it difficult to sleep in the winter. Plus it can make some people's eyes dry :(

Yes! I've been meaning to look this up for a while. I sleep with a fan too and I swear I hear music or sometimes people talking. Its weird. I hear police sirens when I vacuum too. Frequencies fucking with my brain or some such.

They really do! I figure since the fan and vacuum create vibrations our brains try to make something out of it. I don't mind it a lot of the time, I just wanted to know if I was the only one.
