I had the same problem - I wasn't too overweight but I wasn't confident about myself and wanted to lose weight for the longest time but had trouble dieting.
It's a lifestyle change for sure. I wouldn't recommend cutting out any important food groups and keep the fats/oils group to a minimum. Low carb diets and atkins diet are a recipe for disaster imo and too often I see people gaining all the weight back plus more. Keeping fattening and sweet foods completely out of sight, not even purchasing them to begin with, and joining a very top notch expensive gym was what forced me to lose it.
My biggest motivation factor was that I kept telling myself that as you get older losing weight will be harder because honestly that's how it is. The time to lose it is now.
Your problem is you have no idea how to diet. Dieting is fucking easy if you know the rules. First, what you need to do is track your intake so a site like www.fitday.com can help you keep track of what you eat. You need to measure what you eat. Either get a scale or measure the amounts. Also, keep a journal on you to write down what you eat when you aren't close to a computer. The most important thing when dieting is the number of calories you consume. It's actually more important than not eating shit food. http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ That site will tell you your basal metabolic rate. Because you aren't exercising type in your stats and subtract 500 from the result. You will lose 1 pound a week if you do what I tell you.
You should also start to lift weights. Read this link for more info http://www.liamrosen.com/fitness.html
It's mostly diet. Dieting is difficult if eating is addicting for someone. A crack addict goes cold turkey and stops, someone who is addicted to food cannot just stop eating entirely - this is the problem. Just try to gain a healthy relationship with food and start making better choices as difficult as it may be. If you have a bad day and you ate somethings that you didnt want to eat, dont beat yourself up about it (end that cycle) just do better today. Its difficult for a lot of people in North America and other parts of the world. It starts with your mental perspective - try to figure out when it was when you started to loose control, what triggered it? Perhaps that is the root. Anyway good luck, it is very difficult and I'm sure you are have more knowlege about dieting than most.
I keep my weight down by eating until I am not hungry anymore, not until I am full. I eat several small portions a day and I do not eat a lot of junk. I also drink about a gallon of water a day. As far as exercise goes, I run for about a half hour a day three or four days a week. I think lifestyle change works a lot better than diets do.
Or, you could ask a dietitian and doctor.. Fad diets and extreme exercise being unhealthy and ineffective and all..
Cut out all carbs and dairy products. Half all your meals. Drink nothing but water. If you get peckish, snack on fruit. Buy slimming shakes.
I suggest a Whey Protein Concentrate shake as it's a slow release protein and should keep you full most the day. Make sure the shakes you get aren't for body builders as they are loaded with carbs and sugar.
As for exercise you need a high intensity workout. Running, jogging, brisk walking, skipping and bike riding are all extremely good.
Good luck. :-)
Cut out processed food and the crap like chocolate and crisps. You need to monitor your food too :o(
Lol people like you make me laugh - oh i've tried everything its just not working, I cant lose weight! WRONG!!!! Losing weight is about calories in vs. calories out. Burn 250 calories a day by exercise and eat 250 less calories a day (by not eating one fatty thing e.g. a cake!) and you will lose 1lb a week FACT.
The only reason you dont lose weight is either i) your exercise is not intense enough or ii) your still eating too much.
Your better off eating right and exercising none than forcing yourself into the gym to work off less calories than your days' surplus. Its a simple game of calories in vs calories out! just stick to it. Find a motivation!
