Is it normal to have to deal with agonizing pain when i get period?

I can't even take medicine to dull or remove the pain. Why? When I get my period, for at least 4 hours straight, I have such bad pain that I vomit up nonstop, uncontrollable every 5 minutes during the 4 hours or longer. I tried to use a heating pad, but it actually makes me throw up more and the pain gets so bad I sometimes also get a throbbing headache.

When I try to relax myself and try super hard to not throw up and I get there, I have about 5 minutes. In the 5 minutes I try to take medicine to make the pain go away. But minutes later, my body goes crazy and throws it up.

I have had this for years and have no idea what to do. Doctor prescribed me birth control and I did take it but it doesn't do anything for me. One time I even passed out on the floor in my living room before the guests were arriving for thanksgiving. My Mother came in from outside (she has a key) and saw me there and freaked out. She said I didn't wake up until she spilled ice cold water on my face. That's pretty much how bad it gets and when people tell me "childbirth is worse than period pains", it may be compared to theirs, but impossible for mine. If childbirth is worse, I would probably have a heartattack from the pain and die so I don't believe that nonsense. My Mother knows I pass out sometimes and throw up constantly and she has heard of people having it bad, but not THAT bad.

Why am I stuck tortured every month and is it normal?

EXTRA- you don't have to read.
Also, when I get my period, its only the first 2 days that I experience these symptoms. I tried to take medicine before the pain came but I always time it wrong. I can't even go to work when I get it and I remember, once, I called in sick the night before work and I work with a friend..my friend told my boss I had my period and thats why I didn't come in. I was then treated harshly when I arrived back 2 days later. I went over to my boss and began to tell her that I get it bad and she interrupted and told me, "when I get my period, I suck it up and come into work and even if my pain was bad, I wouldn't ever take 2 days off. Don't do it again, please." I then tried to tell her AGAIN but she talked over me saying, "I'm a girl, I know what you go through. there's nothing different there, nothing. A little pain here and there shouldn't prevent you from coming in. Take medicine and you're good to go."
I was so annoyed I told her I quit and walked out.

Unfortunately normal. My sister and I have the same issues and she's struggling with infertility. I would strongly suggest finding a good gynecologist if for nothing else, to rule out certain things and help with pain management. Tell your MD that it is interfering with your employment/financial situation and quality of life. It can take some time to find a solution and/or the right MD but don't give up.
As for your boss... Some women don't understand and/or care. For those who have painful periods, i am sympathetic because i know just how bad it gets. But some women don't, have pain and don't "buy the excuse". It might help to see this from a business perspective. Dependability is key; employees are expendable in this market and a more reliable person could be your replacement. The sooner you get this under control, the better you're gonna be.
    I wish you luck.

i had the same issues with my period minus the puking, though i came close a few times. its really aggravating when other girls just assume all period side effects are the same ugh >:0 anyways my gyno put me on a birth control called lo seasonique and prescribed me heavy duty pain pills just incase but that birth control is really helping me and i never have debilitating cramps anymore. maybe talk to your doctor about trying that BC pill.

I know exactly how you feel, noone seems to understand when I tell them that when I get my period,I get it BAD. You should see a gynae instead of your gp, they will never take it seriously. There may be an underlying cause which they can treat.

i had the same problem..i never threw up but i was always in severe pain every time i had my period. maybe you should ask your doctor about the depo shot. i'm on that and i haven't had any periods. well maybe some light spotting but that's it.

    • Thanks. Is weight gain common with that? I heard the average person gains 20 pounds on that..I'm hoping that's not true.

I don't think this is normal at all. Normal is slight discomfort/minor aches. You should not have to go through this. You should find out if you have something like pelvic inflammatory disease or endometriosis.

It could be a number of things, but I would find myself a good, reliable gyno and find out for sure. Hopefully he/she can help you find some relief. Good luck sweetie!

Have you tried other forms of birth control besides pills? I was on the depo shot and as a result had very light or no bleeding, less severe cramping, and other period-related issues. Different things work for different people. Sometimes it isn't easy to find your solution, just don't give up! Good luck!

Maybe you could try the Mirena coil? I used to get terribly heavy periods and awful pains but my periods are much lighter now and I never have problems. Not sure where you live, but the Mirena coil is available in the UK. It's a progesterone-generating coil so maybe there are different alternatives where you live.
    All the best...
