Is it normal to have this feeling in my chest?

This feeling is really hard to explain, but it's mostly when I'm pretty sad. It feels like I'm getting chills in my heart and it's shrinking. It doesn't particularly hurt it's just a really weird feeling and I think it has to do with sadness. I'm just wondering, has anyone else has had this feeling or a similar feeling? And maybe you can explain it better than me.

I believe that's the physical (or at least we feel it that way) manifestation of emotional pain, I feel it when I am depressed or am being very cynical and morbid in my thought processes.

A year ago I had the feeling everyday and I hated it but now it only happens once in a while so I wasn't sure maybe I was depressed for a bit when it happened a lot.

Can it be a sign of depression or something? Or is it just that some people are more sensitive and feel this physical emotional pain and others dont?

Possibly, but not knowing you I can't really say for sure, you'd know better than anyone. I can tell you that I am a sensitive guy but I don't know if that factors in to the feeling of the sensation. Perhaps you weren't truly depressed but were thinking negatively or perhaps you were depressed which in turn would make you think negatively.

Was there anything during that year that may have caused you sorrow, perhaps something of constant reminder like unrequited love or a death of a loved one? You did a good job explaining the feeling as well, I experience the shrinking along with a sinking sensation in my solar plexus.

Ha.. both of those things actually happened that year. Pretty spot on there. Plus I was living at college and most of my suite mates were pretty mean to me and I didn't like it there at all.

Damn, must have been some rough times...also for some reason I had this feeling you were going to say that, strange. Hope all is well now.

When I'm upset my chest feels warm and hurts. So doesn't feel the same as yours since you get 'chills', but probably the same phenomenon regardless.
