Is it normal to have such an early memory?

My earliest memory is of the time, I believe, I first took steps. I remember it was raining outside, my parents were sitting on a green couch drinking an orange drink at the time (possibly fanta). I started crawling towards them and I tried to get up, I got upright but my balance was shakey, I took 4 steps, my mum shouted something and I fell back down. That's all I remember. Is it normal for someone to remember something from so early in life? The people I've told all think that I'm bullsh*tting. What's your earliest memory?

My first memory was when I was around two years. I was sitting on my grandfather's lap and my brother and sister where running circles around the house. My grandfather use to stick out his cane and trip them. I would laugh and laugh. This is also my only memory of the man as he died when I was two. I cherish it very much.

It's not common, but some people do have single, isolated snapshots from very early ages. They aren't quite like adult memories that have a little more context but are more like brief vignettes with a couple of really vivid details (the Fanta, the green couch). It's totally possible that you remembered your first steps and that it was rainy, but it would be unlikely for you to remember every detail of what your mom was wearing, what was on the television, or what happened after you fell.

You aren't bullshitting; you just happen to have saved a scrap of your life that wasn't touched by childhood amnesia.

As for my earliest memories, I distinctly remember being in my crib and watching a roach fly in through the window. It scared the shit out of me, and I screamed my head off. The white crib rails were very clear to me, so I know I was still a very little kid at the time.

I also remember being in a high chair and spitting up chocolate milk on a picture book I was looking at, which made me cry because I didn't mean to ruin the book. It's gross, and I wish I could remember fun things instead, but that's what I got stuck with. First steps would be much better to remember. :)

I have something similar. I was in a crib but for some reason I was in the room next to mine. I had dinosaur wallpaper at the time and the t rex scared me. I could hear a voice which was obviously either my dad or brother but I remember thinking that the t rex had started talking to me through the wall. I was so freaked out.

These might seem like there memories but more often then not there incidents that people have repeatedly told you about, they become so real that you believe you actually remember these times, some of you may genuinely have these memories but most of you are being tricked by your brain. Generally other than very short snapshots true story like memories will not be permanently stored till your about 4.

See, that's just it. The memories people are describing aren't generally big events; they're tiny, isolated snapshot images of random things. Who would choose to remember puking chocolate milk or a talking T-rex in the wallpaper? You're right that memories can shift, and hearing about something often enough can make you mislabel it as an experienced memory when you really only remember hearing about it, but that doesn't mean it's the case with most of the people posting here. Plenty of people retain tiny shards of very old memories.

I have some kind of memory from when I must have been very young. I think I was in some sort of baby or toddler one piece outfit. For some reason I want to say it was light blue, but who knows. If I recall correctly, I was outside next to the door by the house playing/messing around with some maroon lava rocks, and I saw a water hose faucet. I think I was trying as hard as I could to get it to turn to see what it did, and then someone, probably one of my parents, opened the door and took me inside.

I think that is the memory...I don't know how accurate it is, or if I somehow dreamed up a false memory that never existed. That's one of the only, if not the sole memory I have from very young childhood. I was probably 2 or 3. The next youngest memory I can think of is from when I was 4, but that's probably common to start remembering things from that age.

My earliest memory is when I was about 3 years old, I'm on our old house, in the kitchen, walking downstairs and then climbing up a chair.

As uncommon as it is, there's no reason why one should think it impossible.
I also have some early memories, but there are some things from around the same time that I don't remember.

I remember being a year old and someone was doing a video of me with my grandmother. I have the video and that's how I know the memory was accurate. Other than that, when I was three was my next memory. Didn't really get them regularly until I was 4, 5.
