Is it normal to have stretchmarks?!

Ok let me start out by saying I am very skinny. I am not, nor have I ever been, fat. (I don't mean to sound narcissistic but it's important for this story.) At the age of 13 I noticed I had stretchmarks on the inside of my upper leg. I'm 17 now. I used to be a cheerleader but I quit because of them. I've become so self-conscious about it, I can never really wear shorts above the knee. I want to have my life back and be able to cheer again. Can anyone help??

Stretchmarks have more to do with heredity than anything. People with firm taut skin tend to get them young. The dermis is too tight and tears when you grow, and unfortunately it then scars. People with "doughier" skin tend not to get stretch marks, especially men, even morbidly obese ones. If your finger doesn't really "sink" into your skin, it just pushes it down somewhat like the membrane of a drum, then you're at risk for developing stretchmarks. It's sort of odd that the skin types that seem more elastic/thick tend to get them easier...

Yeah I've tried stretchmark cream and that wasn't working. I had no idea that it happened during a growth spurt!

Stretch marks are a natural part of being a woman. When you go through puberty the places your weight (however slight it is)in different places. It will gather on your thighs, giving the womanly shape that separates women from girls. Stretch marks form because of the tension they were put under during rapid pubescent growth.

You can get creams, they'll make the marks lighters, less obvious, but they'll likely be there permanently.

Don't stress about them. Most women have them. I certainly do. They are nothing to hide.

I really can't cover them up, with the skirts we wear and the flips we do, our legs are going to be showing.
