Is it normal to have sex while someone else sleeps in the same room?

Questions about stuff that happen in United States... those are always the best ones.

So, anyway, I notice that in the States it is kind of common to share a room at universities' dorms. And I just noticed that people have sex even if their roommate is still in the same bedroom! Many have told me that it is normal there and that the other person just has to pretend to be asleep or something. Yet, I find it extremely unsettling that stuff like this actually happens.

So... I was just wondering... Is this truly normal?

Why would you want to have sex with someone in the room with you? What the fuck, man?

I'd die of jealousy if I was in the same room as two people having sex. I would simply remove myself from the room and go for a walk or something.

Imagine if you are a guy and another guy wants to suck you off while your buddies are asleep nearby in the same room.

Some times one's got to do what one's got to do. Hell, I think most college kids would have sex anywhere at all, rather than miss a chance. I think that's perfectly normal and healthy. If you don't get caught and hauled off to jail.

This is one of the many reasons I love America. My girlfriend gave me a blowjob while her mother was in the same room watching TV so possibly normal.

If you find it unsettling that other people are having sex in the same room just masturbate yourself a little thats what I'd do anyhow.

In a University Dorm environment it's a shared room both pay for, so most respectable [men/ or female ] room-mates would have a conversation ahead of time to discuss.

Most would suggest if one wants to have a guest over what should happen; one leave for an hour or so, invited room-mate to join in, or just find other arrangements for the evening. etc., which means the room-mate is not in the room they pay for.

Frankly, if I was paying for a Dorm Room the person who wants to have sex should find another room! Stand your ground. You have papers to write in peace and quite.

If you do not care to watch or listen to sex noises tell them to have fun elsewhere so you can sleep for classes the next morning. Everyone loves an assertive person who knows what they prefer and plus, its your room too.

    I'm from the USA.
I would have to have an agreement ahead of time with my roommate. I don't mind you fucking if you don't mind me watching and jacking off. I would also let him know that I like sloppy seconds. and that there is nothing wrong with a guy sucking another guys dick. in fact I would love him to suck mine after he sucks yours.

If someone was having sex in the same room as me, I probably wouldn't be in the same room as them for long. So long as they weren't at it all night and stopping me get any sleep, I'm sure I'd find somewhere else to hang out.

That'd be awkward for the person having the sex and the roommate a little I'd think, but when it comes to fucking the best policy is take what opportunity ya get though I guess.

I live in america... Yikes! This makes glad that I don't have plans to live in residency, in fact, I think that it is a lot easier on the wallet if you don't. I completely forgot about this factor when I was considering the possibilities of roommates.

That is most unsettling. What ever happened to manners, being classy and wanting privacy?! I would be so disturbed if someone tried to pull that in the same room with me, heck, perhaps in general. I wouldn't want to stay in there to hear and witness that, I'd leave.

      I feel ya there!

I don't like the idea of people boinking in my room while I pretend to be asleep and or vice versa. But to be honest I have even more disdain regarding the idea people putting a sock on the door as a signal that they aren't to be disturbed. I guess I was very blessed to have a snobbish and paranoid Colombian mother so whenever possible I would get a room to myself. But I don't want to think of how expensive that sort of thing is nowadays. Unfortunately, I eventually got myself kicked out of the dorms for certain indiscretions. I ended up in a small one bedroom apartment off campus. I eventually dropped out of college to get married after I got my first professional job in broadcasting which was probably one the biggest mistakes of my life.

If I had the chance to do it all over romance would be the least of my concerns. I think I would be content to live alone in a small apartment with much different priorities than I had the first go round.

Okay, I suddenly feel quite old! So what's your major, Avant-Garde?

      • Maybe it is a latino thing. I was raised in Argentina, and really, the idea of being in the same room as any of my friends have sex is just revolting and awkward. And I am pretty sure my friends feel the same.

I dunno, I just hate the idea of sharing a bedroom period. I don't EVER want to inconvenience myself for the sake of accommodating other people's extracurricular whims.

Argentina sounds nice; I relish my privacy and personal space!

I want to double major in Astronomy/plant sciences. However, the school I am interested in, instead offers Cosmology, which deals with the universe as a whole as opposed to Astronomy only focusing on individual objects. There doesn't seem to be a botany department that doesn't involve biology so, that's out of the equation too. I guess I'll just to have to find something else to major in. :/

  • I agree with you OP, I think it's very unsettling. Some people probably get a thrill with someone else in the room, but I would feel so awkward! I would feel even more awkward if someone was doing that with me present. What am I, goddamn invisible here?? I probably would feel disrespected unless we talked about it ahead of time and made a chick-pac or something. Take that shit to your car or wait til I am gone.

My roommates never had sex when there were others in the room. At the beginning of the year it was generally understood that you would work out an agreement for how to handle those situations. Like they would need to ask you a day in advance if they could have "privacy" in the room, or if they hang something on the doorknob you should chill out and wait.

We called it "getting sexed out".

Extremely unsettling? It's not a big deal, they dont have anywhere else to go and everyone there knows what sex is and that peple do it sometimes. Youd have to be a hell of a prude to not let your roommate fuck someone in his/her own living space, even if you share that space with them, in my opinion.

    • It is not about having sex in your bedroom... it is about having sex while you are still there!

I think that at least asking the other person in advance for some privacy is more acceptable.
