Is it normal to have really irregular periods?

Ok, so I'm 18 years old and I started my period when i was 12. I've NEVER EVER been regular. I've went 9 months without having a period 3 times! I'm not pregnant and I've never been pregnant. It gets really aggravating not knowing when they are just going to show up. When I do get my period they are usually heavy and last up to 8 days. I haven't been to the gynecologist. I am too scared too. I really don't feel comfortable letting someone inspect my crotch and dig around in it. PLEASE help me... Is something wrong with me?

I have had blood samples taken before to check for thyroid problems, because my mom had thyroid problems. But, thank you all for your comments they were all helpful. I'm going to go see the doctor!! =)

My girlfriend is the same way. She is 24 and started at 12 also. She would not ever go to the gyno until a year ago when she bled for 9 weeks straight. Come to find out she had a genetic hormone imbalance and a thyroid disorder. She said she had people examine her vaj 3 different times in a week but after a while she stopped caring because she just wanted the bleeding to stop. Goto the gyno, get put on birth control, and you will be fine. Don't worry too much about it. Gyno's have seen so many females, it is their job, they arent thinking about it as much as you are so don't worry.

Many things can influence your periods. Weight, mood, diet, drugs. Some people just are irregular. I think you need to get over your fear of gynaecologists, though. Having a cervical smear is very important in early detection of a preventable cancer.

You need to talk to at least your regular doctor and think about going to the pill to regulate your period.
