Is it normal to have no plan for the future when you're 18 y/o

So, I'm an 18 y/o female and am currently planning to graduate from high-school in 2-3 years. I'm taking two lines parallel; arts and science, which is all good and OK but...

I have NO PLAN whatsoever regarding what I'm going to make a living from.

I will sometimes snap my fingers and shout "I've got it!", but in a month or two I'll have no longing to follow it through. This is making me kinda nervous because most of my friends have plans for their future.

So, eh, is this normal??

My husband didn't figure out what he wanted to do until he was around 27. Normal.

  • Normal. I have not the ability to plan ahead at 25 years of age. I have one plan, but that's not for here.

Go with what you enjoy doing. Personally I went from vet to teacher to interior designer to architect to contractor/landscaper and finally to engineer in my time in high school. A friend of mine switched between general art and culinary, and finally ended in graphic design. Another started out with a teaching degree in fine arts, but now works in the IT department of a major company.

Figure out the things you enjoy. Working with your hands? Deciphering data? Studying people? Working with kids? What kind of work do get satisfaction from? Keep these things in mind.

You don't have to KNOW what job or career path you want, you should simply know what you want out of that job. Plus, those plans your friends all made? They're probably unrealistic and idealized - which while its OK to try and be idealistic, I wouldn't bet money on half of them (get an Ph.D and be the director of some hospital, own a house, married with 2 kids by age 26? Not likely.)

All in all, yes its normal, no I wouldn't fret over it, but yes I would be thinking about it.

I'm 19 and at uni. I sort of know what I'll be doing after but I don't think that far ahead. I just live for the day. It's always funner and exciting.

You're 18, but you're still not graduating from high school for a few more year!? That's what's not normal. However, having no plan for your life at that age is completely normal. Trust me, I'm in the same situation you are.
