Is it normal to have no goal in life?

I don't know why I'm in school, what I like doing, what I will be doing in the future and what I want to do... I don't really care either.

thats oky, im 25 and i still dont know. my "goals" are more nebulous ideas. Like to be comfortable financially, marry and have a family with some pets.

But im not stuck on my career, like i want to be a _______ and make 6 figures.

Why should you? You're thrown onto this planet and are suddenly alive and then it's assumed you need a plan. Not true. You can happily just exist (and most people do). The people who have a goal are usually the people who want to take some money from you and others and become rich. Great goal in life - take from others!

Even most adults don't have a goal in life (despite them telling you otherwise). Most people simply go to work to earn a living, but just live day to day. Few people actually really plan their lives out the way that you are led to believe they do.

Until fairly recently, I didn't either. I think it's completely normal, and it's normal not to care yet. The future feels like a long way away when you're in school.

Only a very small percentage of people will end up actually doing what they enjoy. The rest of us do what we need to survive.

Honestly, I think this is fine. People will tell you to plan everything, sometimes even from the idea of "not making the mistake they made" but honestly, planning too much makes it very impossible to simply enjoy yourself and relax. A lot of people who do end up overworked and stressing over things that haven't even happened yet. You don't need some huge drawn out plan preparing for 30 years in the future to be a worthwhile human, just enjoy the ride~

A while ago, the fundamental goal of most people would have been simply to survive.

Because survival is so easy for so many of us now, we're left with this void that we feel a need to fill, to justify our existence and motivate us to do more than the minimum.

Of course, a lot of the pressure comes from outside. We feel we should have goals, aspirations, boxes to tick before we die, or we're less valuable and valued.

What people don't tell you is that you don't need goals. You don't need to know what you're going to do in the future, or what you want to achieve out of life. If you're content with the bare minimum (survival) then who's to say you should aspire for anything more than that?

Pressure from other people to be decisive before you're ready often leads to wrong or clumsy decisions.

Many people with no interests eventually become interested on money. It happens when you run out of it.

  • I think goals are very important, but its normal to still be undecided while in school.

I guess you are pretty young? I wouldn't sweat it though, I'd bet that the majority of the over privileged people on earth feel much as you do. Ain't it wonderful having so many choices you can't think of one single thing that interests you. Lucky you.
