Is it normal to have no clue what i want to do with my life at 17?

All the adults around me keep telling me I need to decide on what I want to do with the rest of my life but I just don't have any idea. I can't picture myself doing any one thing for the rest of my life, and I feel like everyone around me already has their life planned out, except for me.

They're hypocrites. It's perfectly normal to not know what you want to do with your life at 17. I don't know what I want to do at 27. I have a friend who doesn't know and he's 37. My dad is 47 and he has no idea either...

It's rare people ever figure out EXACTLY what they want to do in life. Most people just simply "settle" for something they can tolerate...

    How dull.

However, you DO need to actually DO something with your life and education and having a job is part of that.

Granted, what you do at first may not be exactly what you want to do, especially if you don't KNOW what you want to do, but building a strong foundation on an education will give you something to fall back on as you keep moving onward in life to find the means and opportunities to discover your "inner calling".

You're 17, you have a long, LONG way to go and the paths ahead of you are nearly endless. Just try a few out and see how you like them, you CAN change them later if you want. For your own sake, please do not "settle" on something for the rest of your life this early on!

Those who are telling you to decide NOW what you are to do for the next who knows how many decades are giving you some REALLY bad advice.

Best of luck in your journey's ahead, trust me, I'm not that far on myself, but they are JUST starting to get interesting!

Its normal. I'm 32 and I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. Lol! Dont be afraid to pick something though. Its not like you're locked in for life. If you dont like what you choose then change it. You're in control.

Your situation sounds so familiar! I am in the exact same position as you. While my parents understand that I don't know what I want, I still feel pressure because my school set deadlines on when you have to send in your personal statements for applying to unievrsity. I have some ideas of courses I migth want to study, but I just don't know exactly what I want to do and it's really, really frustrating me. Anyone else like to help?

People, it's time to wake up! "Plenty of time"? You don't have plenty of time. Life is indeed short, so you should try making the best out of it while you're still here.

I used to be exactly like that, not knowing what I wanted to do with my life, no idea about who I am or what my place in this messed up world was. But then one day something urged me to open my eyes, and I realized that I don't have unlimited time, and I should try to make the best out of my life. And now I know exactly what I want to do, what path I want to follow.
And so should you - open your eyes to the possibilities before you.

Totally normal. Some people are in their 30s and still don't know what they want to do with their lives. I used to have mine all planed out, but things got all messed up, so now I simply try to go with the flow.

Hell I'm 31 and still don't know! I've been a cop, went back and got my degree, thought about law school, work online now and also am learning how to tattoo. Eh, be a dreamer. It keeps you young and happy.

    I am 29 and I still don't know!
It is too restrictive to limit oneself to one passion.
I think nobody know why they do what they do?

not where you plan to end, but where you plan to start is the question. of all those around you that have already planned their life, well, life doesn't always go according to plan.

This is silly you are just a kid. Didn't you hear 30 is the new 20 and that makes you an adolescence. Seriously though you got plenty of time don't stress.

Get as broad an education as possible, as long as you don't end up on the bread line wondering what todo, its normal

  • If that is what they are asking you then that is a stupid question. THEY probably don't know what they want to do "for the rest of their lives."

The question need only be: do you have plans for once you have finished high school? Life is a series of steps, mis-steps & pathways & surprises. No wonder youth get turned off when it is made out to be a single boring decision.

im 21 and i dont know either, theres so much pressure for people your age in reality you just gotta do your own thing in your own time instead of making decisions under presure

  • Everyone is like that at 17. I remember adults hounding me around that age as well about my future. Got rather sickening and I wanted to just tell them all off and to leave me alone about it lol.

In 21 and still have no clue.... But there's endless possibilities n loads of time

  • I was exactly the same when I was 17 (not so long ago). People told me I had to decide what I wanted to do even though I had no idea.

Just take a little time for yourself, ask yourself what are you interested in and take it from there. And of course, if you find out that it's not what you really want to do, you can always change your mind.

Hope things turn out okay :)
