Is it normal to have nightmares every night ?

My girlfriend has been having nightmares for about 3 weeks. She wakes up in the middle of the night crying. I sleep in the same bed with her. How can I comfort her ? Is it normal to have bad dreams every night ?

I have nightmares and night terrors. Up until recently, I had them every night. I would scream or shout and cry and thrash around in the bed. My husband didn't know what to do. I started taking a prescription medication called "Prazosin" and I very rarely have them now!!!! :) This is what my husband does when I DO have them: He puts his arms around me and holds me close to him. He whispers, not waking me, that I am ok and that he loves me, and I am just having a bad dream. My subconscious hears it. He rubs my back or strokes my hair, sometimes he will gently wake me up and then just hold me until I fall asleep again. We are both thankful for this medication it has helped both of us to sleep better! Have her ask her doctor about it. I started at 2mg and now take 6mg a night. It knocks me out about 45 minutes after taking it. I don't feel groggy when I wake up. You both have my empathy, and I wish you good luck!

When I was younger (about 8 - 12) I had terrible nightmares on a regular basis. My mum and dad used to hear me screaming in my sleep on a nightly basis. often times I couldn't remember the dream. Nowadays I'm fine and dont usually remember my dreams.

Based on my personal experience its kinda normal to have nightly nightmares. I dont really know how to stop them.
Maybe she could look into lucid dreaming but that takes a bit of commitment to learn how to do.

maybe the nightmares will pass on their own like they did with me.
