Is it normal to have never had a job at the age of 20?

I am twenty years old and I have never had a paid job. My parents are well off and I've never needed to work.

I'm an engineering student and I always get rejected when applying for internships. I'm afraid that I'll never get a job because I have no previous employment.

No, time to get out there and experience the real world. Just because mummy and daddy are well off does not give you an excuse to take a free ride.

No one wants to hire a spoiled brat who never had to work. Work builds character and demands respect.

Not normal. My parents are well off but I started out with a paper route at 11. then call center at 16...then dry cleaner's and now i'm a pharmacy tech. My parents didn't give me everything I wanted so I earned it myself. Employers probably see you as lazy. Good luck.

I doubt employers will see him as lazy. Do you know what it's like to major in engineering?

Probably too tough for the op since he/she keeps getting rejected.

It's ok, I'm 19 and still looking for a job. I've applied at a few places but have yet to hear back. :/ good luck to you.

  • Build up your volunteer resume or offer companies to intern for them for free, just so you can build up some experience. Employers want to know that you are a reliable worker that they can count on. With experience also comes resourcefulness, which is another characteristic employers seek in potential employees.

It's not uncommon for a young person who's never needed work to not have a job.

Your employers are probably afraid you don't have a work ethic. You should volunteer. I'm not say pack food for 2 hours one day but spend 4 hours a week at a soup kitchen for over a month. It gives works experience.

It's also really hard for young adults to get jobs nowadays so theirs no shame in taking an entry level job.

    Not really normal.

I've been working since 13-21(so far) at 4 different jobs. Employers see that and jizz lol...just volunteer/intern someplace. It's the only way to get your foot in the door. But keep in mind it may be a while before you get your dream job. Today's America isn't the get a college degree and a job awaits you kinda place.
