Is it normal to have multiple personalitys.

People say I have multiple personalitys. 5 to be exact (6 if you count my normal self.), and I switch between them so often my friends have given them names.
Edgar: always grouchy and has no apparent reason for it.
Brick: acts cool and like a ladies man the entire time.
Vlad: a goth boy that freaks out when he sees what he's wearing when I change to him.
Kyle: a smart boy that can awnser many questions. Basicly a nerd.
Jack: the most ath:etic form of me.
My "normal” form: not grouchy, not always acting cool, not goth, not goth, not a nerd, not that athletic.
Those are descriptions of my personalitys from my friends. Please tell me if this is normal.

There hasn't been one study done that has conclusively proven the existence of dissociative identity disorder. Most experts believe it is impossible to have multiple truly separate personalities, and that people who claim so, are faking. However, some dissociative symptoms really do exist, such as detachment from your sense of self. My diagnosis for you? Troll. Next?

This sounds like your fantasy. You probably read about MPD or saw it on TV and thought it was cool and weird. Then you either deluded yourself into thinking you had these alter egos, or you made them up and started pretending you do.

I diagnose you with ASS - Attention Seeking Syndrome.

  • I don't know how many times I've seen this asked on here and I always tell people the same thing.
People with multiple personality disorder do not remember their alters. If you remember your other personalities you have an identity problem, not MPD (also called Dissociative Identity Disorder) I have known someone with MPD and she did not ever remember what she did when she would switch and completely blacked out every time.

That's not true. There is no absolute with MPD. A lot of people diagnosed with MPD remember their alters, can list them off and describe them. For some people diagnosed, their personalities have internal conflicts, or are able to view the actions of the alter in control from 'behind the scenes'.

Just because you know somebody with MPD and her symptoms were different, doesn't mean it's the same for all those diagnosed.

      • I understand that psychological diagnoses definations vary and are often vague but I looked it up more. It seems most people agree that they don't remember "important" information.

The DSM-IV provides the following criteria to diagnose dissociative identity disorder:
1.Two or more distinct identities or personality states are present, each with its own relatively enduring pattern of perceiving, relating to, and thinking about the environment and self.
2.At least two of these identities or personality states recurrently take control of the person's behavior.
3.The person has an inability to recall important personal information that is too extensive to be explained by ordinary forgetfulness.
4.The disturbance is not due to the direct physiological effects of a substance (such as blackouts or chaotic behavior during alcohol intoxication) or a general medical condition (such as complex partial seizures).

If someone remembers everything well they would probably be diagnosed with something else because lots of people switch between behavioral and thought patterns.

I'm not trying to argue either in case I came off that way. I am agreeing that someone may be aware their other personalities.

that disorder happens with people who were physically abused or ever tortured as a child, usually sexually!!! did that happen to you? it may have, and you just can't remember....how is your relationship with both parents???? are you close? afraid of them or one? please consider this and see a psychiatrist!!!!!

Sounds like different moods. Actually having multiple personality disorder is very rare, or maybe not even true. Maybe you might have bipolar. Or perhaps you are just changing your moods very often. I am like that.. sometimes, I don't feel like myself, and at different points of the day, my opinion towards one thing changes drastically. That just means that you haven't 'found' yourself yet.

If you aren't trolling, any person would know that having multiple personalities isn't considered normal. You don't even have to ask.

This comment sounds more like ASS (@disthing borrowing it) to me.

I felt like I have the same basic problem, but I figured out it was just my own personality changing frantically and quickly throughout the day because I am too self-conscious. I look at some situation and attach myself to it in hopes of fitting into it safely. Socially, physically, philosophically, etc. I thought I had about the same personalities, but my therapist assured me that I was just resorting to mind gymnastics' to cope with my forth said self-conscious problem, and that the real problem was that I have issues with the past. I don't function like most people because I didn't open neural pathways normally. Science still doesn't understand most of this, sorry for being so vague.
