Is it normal to have moderately severe acne at twenty

I am twenty years old and have acne and I rarely see anyone else in my age group that has acne. As a young teenager I had light acne and up until a year ago I had light acne. For the past year I've been under a lot of stress and the acne went from light all the way to severe.

  • Acutane works wonders too but I don't know if it's still out there.. Keep seeing a commercial for people who used it and got a severe side effect and they are gonna get lots of money or something. I used it when I was younger and my acne vanished. The only side effect I had was shedding skin on my lips like a snake. Go see the doc in my opinion.

You got off lucky. I ended up with liver damage. And as a bonus, I got to keep my acne.

      • Hmm.. so that commercial about Acutane is true about the law suits about damages to organs? I always thought it was another tv scam.. How do you know you got liver damage? I'm sorry that happened to you.

No idea about the law suits, I'm in Australia and I don't watch TV. The major one I've heard about Acutane is suicide. I work for an endocrinologist (hormone specialist) who wasn't too keen on it as a treatment.

I didn't link the Oratane (what I took, different name, same drug) to the liver damage til way after I found out I had problems. I mentioned it in passing a few months ago to my naturopath, who went nuts. I doubt it is the sole contributor, to say it's not partially down to lifestyle would be a big cop out on my part, but the drug would more than likely has played a large part in it.

I know I have liver damage through blood tests and ultra sound scans, consultation with GP and gastroentrologist. I'm lucky its not severe, and that I see a naturopath who does really good work on reversing it (which conventional medicine doesn't tend to do, they're more into maintaining for this condition).

Acutane may work as a treatment for some people, but only as a last resort, there are many other options to exhaust first, and I think it's important to know the side effects - unfortunately, some can only be known in retrospect.

I'd actually prefer just to have the acne, personally, but other people have other decisions.

Just for the record, I'm not some nutter who completely avoids conventional medicine - I consider all options, and though I take the natural alternative where possible, I full acknowledge that there are situations where natural is NOT the best option.

Sorry if I my original post sounded bitter, btw, Momonator...It wasn't meant to and was in no way directed at being angry/whatever with you...Just realised how it may have sounded.

Doc will give you some cream for it. I was given some but I never use it. My acne gets worse when I do not eat though. That is just me though.

I've found that using a salicyclic acid wash with pumice stone works (I'm using Garnier Pure atm, it seems to work well), along with taking zinc and magnesium, witch hazel as a toner and calendula cream for moisturiser.

Mine flares up with stress too - only I have roseacea to boot. Hurrah.

I took accutane for 6mths when I was a teen. It was horrid, my skin kept tearing, lips were bleeding a lot of the time, sunburn was outrageous (I'm pale to begin with...extra sun sensitivity is not fun) and now when I burn, instead of it turning to tan, it turns to bruises. As I mentioned above, I also now have liver problems - and I've never been a drinker. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone - it also has other serious side effects that are too high risk, in my opinion.

this will sound like some stupid thing a perv guy would say but if you have a bf put his sperms on it when you sleep ... it worked for me and the logical reason why is because sperms are dreanched in semen and semen has the very best strongest anti bacterial and viral defence ... after all it is protecting the genetic make up of a seed etc ... the only other thing in the human body with a simular defence is brain fluid ... and i dont think your boyfriend would want to donate that for a good cause hehe ... PS you dont need to drink it etc , just rub it on your face ... i do it at night , but dont live with my bf .. im 16 and had some crazy nasty acne at 15 .... i heard about this from the net and tried it ... it worked very fast ... i only repete this process everynight coz i dont want it to come back.... good luck

Its normal. I have milld cystic acne and I'm 28. I have very oily skin which causes this problem. Stress and hormones have a lot to do with your acne issues. In my opinion your diet may also have a lot to do with it as well. I watch how many sodas I drink a week and how much caffeine and nuts and spicy food I eat. You can also see a dermatologist.

yeah i reccomend going to a doctor, and maybe getting a recomendation to see a skin specialist. I have the same problem as you atm if you go though they should be able to give you something to clear it up. Don't worry about if they will think it is abnormal that someone your age still has it they see people with it each day and wont judge.
