Is it normal to have horrible grammar?

So, in high school, we have have to take 4 years of English class (at least in CA). Even if it's different elsewhere, it was still taught in grade school. Why must people use poor grammar? They also get really angry when you correct them on their grammar. I just don't get it. Even on this site, people try to argue, but I cant take them seriously since they write like dummies.

It's all fun and games until you enter the work force as an adult. Then you realize that every memo, e-mail and proposal you write is being discarded, and treated as a joke. Not because of the content; it doesn't matter how great your ideas are. It is because of the grammar. Learn proper English people, or learn to love Big Macs. That will be your big night out for a long long time.

In all fairness this world isn't going to last much longer, the youth of today are a massive fail.

  • Yeah I can understand if it's not your main language and all but if it is there's a problem :/

I didn't even finish the Ninth grade, and I type more accurate, talk more eloquently, and have better spelling then majority of the COLLEGE kids I know. I'm not saying my grammar and usage is spectacular, but damn. Everyone is complaining about how the Mexican immigrants cannot speak English and majority of American teens cannot refrain from using 'like' every other word or spell properly. My generation is screwed.

I hate bad grammar. I had a science teacher for microbiology once that had isolated the virus that causes juvenile diabetes. But his grammar was so bad that he sounded like Gomer Pyle.

"Why can't the English teach their children how to speak?" LOLOL!!! (And before anyone flames me, that's a reference to a song from "My Fair Lady" where Professor Higgins laments the desecration of language in modern society.)

I agree with you completely. I get emails at work written by people using the same grammar, language, and spelling you see on this site. It's pathetic. All I can hope for is that it means those of us to take the time to communicate well will be recognized and promoted faster. (Into positions where we'll have to supervise/babysit emails from our teams so we don't look like idiots...Rapture...)

Eh, some are indeed idiots but some are just honest typing mistakes. Your post had a few errors...it's just normal.

In writing, every grammatical error is apparent. Don’t even get me started on your and you’re or there, their and they’re. Still better than using the wrong word completely.

It's a lot easier to use crappy grammar since a lot of ppl use the iPhone app and like texting grammar don't matter.

I hear you!! I get soo annoyed! Especially with the "I seen..." and the "it went good". Those are two of my most popular pet peeves!

Go and learn about something with substance. If grammar is all you have then you are stupid yourself.

The thing is, grammar is so BASIC! The people who are too lazy to use correct grammar don't deserve to learn anything with substance. I think it's perfectly acceptable to want to communicate with people who are able to communicate back. You just sound really condescending and arrogant.
