Is it normal to have heightened senses in the dark?

Whenever I'm in the dark, like taking a walk late at night (I do that sometimes) or just laying in my bed at night, trying to sleep, it seems my hearing is much sharper than normal. I can hear every little thing, that I don't usually hear in the day. Like the tiniest rustle of leaves, or the faintest hint of footsteps in the distance. Is that normal?

  • Its refreshing to read a story about someone who is "not" afraid of the dark.

Of course it's normal. Your senses attune themselves to the available information. If it's really quiet you will be able to hear noises that would otherwise be too subtle to perceive. "so quiet you could hear a pin drop." This applies to the other senses as well. In a riot of color, taste, or smell it becomes harder to pick out small variations. Since it is change which informs the senses (the eyes actually constantly twitch about so that they can perceive a continuous image) it is important within what range this change occurs. In a very noisy environment the relative change of a small noise is imperceptible while in a quiet environment it is significant.

If it really dark at night and u can hardly see then ur other senses get stronger. They say if u loose one of or sensations then the others become more sharp. If u see a blind person their sense if smell touch and hearing r more sensitive. This in my opinion is normal!

  • totally normal because your body is relying on your hearing rather than sight
