Is it normal to have extreme difficulty waking?

20 year old male.
I have a rather problematic issue. I will roughly once a week sleep directly through any and all alarms that I may have set. It doesn't matter if I got five hours of sleep or 9. It happens either way.
Have you heard of anyone with this?

I think you need to go to sleep even earlier than you usually do. If the last things you are doing before bed consists of some form of entertainment, you should sacrifice it for a few nights and sleep earlier. See if you are not getting enough REM sleep. Every two hours is the cycle of REM sleep.

Yup. My sleep patterns change a lot. Sometimes I'll go weeks staying up too late and waking up too early, getting maybe four hours sleep. Sometimes I'll oversleep every day, still not more than six hours usually. Alarms mean nothing to me. I hate them with a bloody passion. I smash em. Beep at me will you ?!?!

  • It happens to people who've been deprived of REM sleep - the mind will force a catch-up when it has a chance. Would increasing your nightly sleeps during the week by an hour help, maybe?

Maybe you should take afternoon/evening shifts.. or find a job that allows you to do so. This way you won't have to struggle with your body's need for sleep.

      This.

I work graveyard shifts because I am a night owl and my sleep schedule has not suffered due to it. I go to work at roughly 10 p.m., come home at roughly 6 a.m. and sleep until 3 p.m. and I usually feel great.

Yup... I worked in a little security company for a while (mainly just subs for bigger companies), but graveyard shifts aaall the way.

Some people can pull it off for a long while, but for me it started to get kinda weird. I try to work mid-day/evening shifts now.

I struggle from this too. I have a habit of staying up till about 3AM and needing to be awake by 8AM. 5 hours isn't a horrible amount, but I should really be getting more.

Perhaps you have sleep apnea and don't get good sleep. Maybe see a doctor and have a sleep study done.
