Is it normal to have difficulty putting words together?

For most of my life I have had difficulty thinking of simple words and phrases, and by the time I thought of something, it would no longer be relevant to the conversation. And when I try to just say it as the words come to mind, my speech is filled with "ums" and I usually end up trailing off because the person I'm talking to seems like they're getting impatient with my constant "um"ing.
Other people around me seem to have a much easier time thinking of how to explain their thoughts and ideas in a much shorter time that I need to.

I have the same problem sometimes. I had a hard time giving speeches in my speech class.

You are normal just like most people here as far as I can tell. You can improve you speech, because I think it is more of a habit, then a problem.

Try this first on your own, then with close friends:
Memorize something (a rap, poem, or a monologue). When you perform, be confident and bold. Practice in the mirror and look yourself in the eye. When your friends come over, you look them in the eye...

Have your friends read poems with you once a week. It can be fun.
