Is it normal to have difficulty asking questions at fast food places?

Whenever I go to a new fast food place, or one that has some crazy new item, I find it only natural to ask a simple question about it. Something like "What is this item?", especially when the menu is just a long list of names with no pictures or information.

In response, I usually just get confused stares, unrelated answers, or even fits of anger. Tends to go something like:

"What's an Ultra Bacon Deluxe Supreme?"
"You want an Ultra Bacon Deluxe Supreme? What else?"
"No, I just want to know what it is."
"It's $3.75."
"Err, no, I mean, what's on it? Like, the ingredients?"
"... (Blank stare)"
"Okay, how about this... does it have mayonnaise on it?"
"I'll put mayonnaise on it for you."
"No, I just wanted to know..."
"Do you want the thing or not!?"

A lot of the fast food workers around here have heavy accents, but at the same time it just seems so bizarre for it to be such a common issue. I'm talking, like, dozens of places, dozens of different cashiers. Anyone else deal with this sort of thing frequently? It almost feels like they just aren't used to the concept of answering questions at all.

You don't seem to have any difficulty asking the questions, the problem is getting answers. The counter staff you're dealing with probably don't have a clue what the ingredients are, so stop bothering them - ask for the manager.

You sound like the perfect pain in the ass customer. Look. You're in a freaking fast food joint. Their are more than likely lots of flies around. A distinct scent of body odor comes from some undetermined waiting customer standing behind you. Angry voices spoken in some Middle East jargon filters out from the kitchen behind the greasy front counter. From somewhere a baby in need of changing is screaming it's head off. And in the middle of all of this madness you, only you have a question. I really wish you would give that some serious thought.

Perhaps the better OP would have been to ask if it's normal to ask questions, then! Honestly I just can't imagine why it wouldn't be - I mean, what kind of bizarre person pays money for something they know nothing about? Is it normal just just waltz in, plop down a $5 bill, and ask for a Number Seven without the slightest clue what you just bought? O_o

In a fast food joint in the USA? That IS the normal thing to do!

Surprise! The Ultra Bacon Deluxe Supreme is a burrito. :D

Jokes aside, your response demonstrates just how normal it is for people to get royally ticked off by simple questions. I'll try to keep that in mind; my goal is to not make people angry. I know you were just trying to be mean, but it was still kinda helpful, so thanks. XD

A simple solution is not to go there and eat that nasty food.
