Is it normal to have delayed emotions?

When I get bad news or something really awful happens I don't usually feel much at the time. Sometimes it's days, weeks or even months but it eats away at me and eventually it hits me hard and I get really depressed about it and just stay in bed for a few days. Why can't I just cry or get angry when stuff happens and get it over with like people on tv. Is the way that I react to stuff normal?

My emotions are delayed as well. Even positive ones.

I think it's denial, like rose posted. It takes a while for reality to sink in.

Nn. It's normal for me, at least. Processing isn't my strong suit.

Are you familiar with the process of grieving? There are five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.

Do a Google search on the stages of grief, and you might learn some helpful that that may give you some insight.

    • I hadn't thought of it this way. I suppose grieving isn't exclusive to death, this philosophy can be applied to all forms of loss.

Yeah, I remember someone telling me to treat a bad breakup like a death when I was 20, and it actually helped me.
