Is it normal to have dated but can't find better?

I met this guy (Let's call him...steve) in my Sophmore year of high school.
he was everything to me, my best friend mainly. we never got into a committed relationship, and we liked it that way. I loved him, I still do.
I've tried to get over him, but it's just not happening.
I went out for Coffee with him to talk about school (he's a year ahead of me, and i'm going to the same college) and we hadn't seen each other face-to-face for about a year until we did go out for said coffee.
is it normal for me to still have such intense feelings for him after all this time?
He knows about them, and says he still has feelings for me too. but I don't know quite if I trust that.

I found it funny because the OP never again referred to him as Steve.

The way I see it, he sounds like an ex boyfriend who you left on good terms. I've read plenty, literally a lot, of stories on here about people who still have feelings for their ex. If you guys were best friends, why would you try to get over him? This just reinforces the ex feeling I stated that you have earlier. He was you're best friend and I think that you should trust him. A simple coffee date could really bring you two back closer. I think that you should date the person if you feel so intensely about him, assuming he feels the same, which it sounds like he does.
