Is it normal to have an overly strict mom?

I study Engineering, work 2 part time jobs and usually spend my weekends studying. I called my boss from my twice a week job and told him I wouldn't be going to work on the following week (had college finals). He said it was ok. I'm not used to missing work, in fact he gave me a raise a couple of months earlier for my performance.

Anyway, I live with my parents and I told my mom about my being absent and she just stood there looking at me as if I did it out of mere laziness, she then compared me to other people, ''What about your cousin, he had to work and study too.. '' and kept going on and on. I told her that my major is much harder than most people's, and that I have been having a very hard time coping with all the pressure. 8 completely different tests in less than a week, I just needed a week off, you know? What got me mad was the fact that she didn't even hear me out. 2 jobs and a major ( I'm 22), don't drink, don't smoke, not much of a party goer. So, I don't get into trouble.

Am I overreacting?

I know this might not seem like a problem to some people, but if you really go through this you know what I mean.

I guess, I just wanted to rant a bit...

All in all, It's her way of being and I respect it. I just need to learn not to carry that on to my kids ( in the future).

      tks for the answer

What culture are you? Sorry to be stereotypical now but I am assuming you are not of American decent. Foreign parents naturally tend to be overbearing especially when it comes to education and work at the same time. Also, is your mother the only parent? Does she need help with the bills and you cannot help much if you miss one week of work? One week should not be the cause of you losing your home though, she should be aware you will be handsomely paid when you complete college.

hey man, tks for reply.. You are correct, I'm Brazilian. As a matter of fact I live in Brazil.

Nope, My father and her have a successful business, they make a lot of money. I guess it was her upbringing, she might be carrying on the cycle, ya know? I work for my own growth not for the money itself.

Anyway, they are very caring (I'm not complaining). SHe knows I'm getting well paid, and that if all else fails, I still inherit the company. I'ts not about the money, again, it was her upbringing.

      tks for the reply!

No problem, any time. You are very fortunate to have both parents really care for you. They are just trying to instill a good upbringing and work ethic. By the way you are grateful, I can see that they have succeeded in doing this. Good luck. I am also of foreign decent and understand where you are coming from.

My parents can be like this, but not to that extent. D: You know what's right for you, I'd like to see your mom doing so well in the same position.
