Is it normal to have an iq of around 125?

I have taken 2 Official IQ tests and one practice test from an organization called Mensa, and all of them gave me an age adjusted IQ between 127 and 131. I already know the average is around the 100 mark, but what i want to know is if most people are actually average (actually around that mark), or if the amount of smart and dumb people is just that even, meaning most people are either above or below the average.

Splendid. I've taken a few in the past. When I was 13 my psychologist gave me one and I wasn't paying attention too much but my IQ was 110. Then during junior year of high school I was given another one. I was more focused and got 135. Then some years after that, my brothers fiance was in school and had to give someone the test so I took it again and got 127. I sure do dumb pretty well though. Harrumph.

When people say I'm a bird brain I take it as a compliment. Woot woot!

With that IQ you don't know the definition of average?

I actually think that OP's question proves that they know the definition of "average".

They were insightful and realized that the "average" of 100 could either be the result of extremely low scores and high scores, with very few middle scores, such as (60,70,130,140) which added up = 400, divided by 4 is 100... OR all middle scores such as (99,101,99,101) added up = 400, divided by 4 is 100.

Sounded to me like OP was curious whether people either score way out on either end of the spectrum, or more toward the middle.

AND to add to my comment up above, I looked up the IQ test distribution and it is in fact a bell curve, with most people scoring close to 100 instead of people getting a lot of 70's, 80's, 130's and up.

I took an IQ test and came out with 136.

I did it to prove a point that those who say IQ tests are bunkum aren't just too scared to take one, or don't like the result they got.

Despite a relatively high grade, I still think IQ tests are pointless shite and really achieve nothing. Mensa members are just a bunch of circle-jerking pricks who should be put out to pasture.

i agree. a IQ test isnt 100% accurate

if a person is trying though, and the IQ test is set up correctly, then i believe you might be able to get somewhat accurate results

It's not the accuracy that is the issue (but I see what you're trying to say yer cheeky git) but that out doesn't really prove anything. It doesn't help you do better in real life (high IQ generally = low social skills) either.

you sure you know what im trying to say? lol

true, i dont think people should take iq test to heart

but i dont agree with high iq = low social skills

depends on the person with that one

As someone with, well lets say an IQ well above the average, I actually tend to agree that people with an IQ much beyond say 125ish tend to have less developed social skills. Whether this is due to some form of autism as some have claimed, or whether it's just because as children we were ostracised for being "weird" and dissimilar to our peers, and hence were denied the opportunity to learn good social skills, I can not say.

Considering how many people there are, I would guess that although there are probably people out there with really low IQ's and really high IQ's, I think if the average is 100, probably most people will fall somewhere close to 100. I think it would be unlikely that people either fall way below or way above without people in the middle.

But based on what most people report their IQ to be, I haven't ever really heard anyone that says they have an IQ of less than 110. Either they don't like to talk about it, or maybe a lot of those numbers come from tests that people didn't really want to take. Maybe they weren't really trying to get a good score or care about getting a good score. It's hard to say.

Either way, I don't really consider an IQ test to always tell the full story.

I kind of agree; I just find it difficult to believe the average is actually 100 - event though, that's obviously by definition, the average...

A high IQ doesn't mean you're smart - it just means you have the ability to become smart. You still have to learn stuff - knowledge doesn't just materialise cos you have a high IQ score.

knowledge doesnt just appear instantly, but with more common sense, you should be able to figure stuff out more easily

if a IQ test is based off common sense: patterns, process of elimination, connect-the-dots, ect and gets a high IQ, then that person IS smart

a dumb person will not be able to answer correctly, only by guessing, and a way to try to eliminate guessing is to put more questions into the test

plus if they guess, then their IQ cant really be determined that way anyway. theres no point if you have to guess.

If people were smart enough, the average IQ could be 140.

Unfornately I doubt society will ever reach an average of 140.

IQ tests get re-normed every few years because the abstract part of general intelligence has been climbing steadily in the entire population for years. I think you mean that 140 will become the new 100.

Remember that graduate schools are loaded with people having the same IQ that Einstein had. His accomplishments resulted from additional qualities with which most gifted people do not excel.

In a metaphorical description, he once reflected on his accomplishments. He likened space-time to the curvature of a branch on a tree. "A caterpillar slowly crawls on a tree branch not noticing that the branch is curved. I was lucky enough to notice that the caterpillar does not notice." That one statement is more fucking insightful than anything I ever heard from a professor in four years of university.

yea no. i dont believe that

people go to schools to acquire knowledge most of the time, not get common sense

common sense is a quality. and it should be rated on a IQ test, or the test to me loses credit

and well i have no idea about this caterpillar thing lol

what you mean by "abstract part"?

you mean like simple things like common sense? what?

entire population of which country? america?

i like it better if we could realize that 140 is recognized as the average, to better understand that most people are smart.

saying everyone is 100 at surface doesnt give you the impression that most people are smart. gives the impression that most people are bland. average. ect.

Intelligence testing usually measures three types of aptitudes: verbal, numeric, and abstract reasoning. Your general score is a composite of the three. An explanation of abstract reasoning would raise far more questions than it would answer. Click this ->

I've always said having a high intelligence means nothing more than "I come up with the same wrong answers as everyone else - I just do it faster".

I'd gladly exchange a few points of IQ for some extra wisdom, common sense, or foresight.

the "Average" IQ actually depends on what test they use - there are several.

I could be wrong (it has been a while since I read up on it), but I think the Standardised Stanford-Binet IQ test (one of the more common ones) produces a bell curve with a mean of 100, and rates "Genius" as being above 140 (which I think is either 1 in 200 or 1 in 400).

    Comment Hidden ( show )
      -
    • Kookulainamus

Stanford-Binet uses a standard deviation of 15. That puts a score of 140 at 2.6666 standard deviations above the mean. Only 1 in every 256 people would attain this score.
