Is it normal to have an imaginary friend?

I have an imaginary friend. He has a very distinct personality for a guy, he has dislikes and likes like a normal person, but he doesn't actually exist. I told this one guy in my history class about him, and he insisted that I have schizophrenia. Am I just crazy or am I completely sane?

Depends on what you mean by imaginary. If you are consciously aware that this person is not real and doesn't exist then you're not schizophrenia, but if you question his existence, then you may want to see a doctor.

There's nothing wrong with that. I have a ton of imaginary friends that I enjoy spending time with. :)

To be completely honest, if you asked anyone but me they'd probably say you need to see a threapist. That's what a psychologist would say. But I don't see a problem with it. Some of us think differently about friends and life, and I think that's beautiful.

It depends; did you create him or randomly start seeing/hearing him? If you consciously made him up it's fine. It may be unusual but if it's not causing any problems you don't have to stop.

Imaginary friends are normal for children, but not for adults. But I agree with Anime7 -- if you know he's not real and he's not causing you problems in life (eg you have no real friends), then you're probably ok.

What if you're a really lonely adult?
