Is it normal to have a situationally large vocabulary?

I've always had a broad vocabulary for my age group. However, I've never really been able to fully utilize it at all times. Thinking about it recently, I've realized that it usually comes out when I'm trying to be funny(I.E., spilling out paragraphs of pedantic nonsense like a 1950s Great American novelist) or when talking about a subject I take interest to. I understand the concept of a well of knowledge, yet I also found it strange that my particular "well" pertains to my speaking patterns. Mostly, I was curious if others experience something similar, and if so, that they would share.

I'm sketched out, because OP ended a sentence with a preposition.

The more passionate I am about something the more flamboyant my language becomes. You’re normal.

I have a speech impediment so articulating large words is a bitch to do in normal conversation. When I write I have no such restrictions. Many times in my life my language art teachers were extremely surprised (to the point where some thought I plagiarized) that I could be so "advanced" in how I write.

My brain out paces my mouth so I need to take a few seconds to properly plan out my sentences, it is such a drag to do it.

I feel like I have a lot of vocabulary just from being bilingual. Spanish - which I have been learning for almost 15 years - has taught me many new English words and vice versa.

It's a good life skill to have a large vocabulary, but use it wisely. Choosing big ol' fancy words when something much simpler would do makes you look like a dick who is desperately trying to impress people, or put others in their place.

It might make you feel smart but it has no other benefit.

I find my vocabulary definitely has a split personality. My intellectual words come out when I'm in a debate 🤣

Its normal. I wish I have this skill. It would be really useful when writing those pain in the ass 10 page college essays hahaha.. Just don’t overdo it cuz some people are insecure about their intelligence and they might think that you’re showing off

Communication is about transferring information from your head to another person's head. Someone with good communication skills has an intuitive understanding of the level of language complexity and the vocabulary they should use when speaking to different audiences. It would be stupid to talk to a five year-old in the same way you'd speak to your college history professor, and most people understand that they'd come across as a patronising jerk if they ever did the reverse of that.

Having said that, keeping things as simple as possible is always the best approach. Richard Feynman undoubtedly had a very large vocabulary, but he became famous for his ability to express hideously complex concepts in theoretical physics in a way that most reasonably intelligent people could grasp. On the other side of that coin, there are those who try to impress people with their huge vocabulary and others who use their linguistic abilities to deceive.

Don't be one of those people. If you get in the habit of trying dazzle with your vocabulary, sooner or later you're going to use a word incorrectly in the presence of someone smarter than you, and you'll end up feeling like a fool. If you use language to bullshit people, you can be sure that they will eventually see through the smokescreen you've put up.
