Is it normal to have a recurring physically painful dream?

I have had a recurring dream for about 6 years now where I either cannot open my mouth or cannot close it, as if my jaw is locked shut or open. THe worst thing is it is really painful to the point I think its real every time, I never know its a dream and sometimes I break my jaw in my dream because I am tring to shut it and I can't. Is this normal and is there a reason it keeps happening?

The thing with dreams is that when we go to sleep, our bodies naturally release chemicals that stop our electro-impulses from getting beyond the brain much, if you want to look into it more, read up on the Sympathetic/Parasympathetic nervous system. The important thing is that when you are dreaming, you dont act out your dreams physically, like sleepwalking, because it can result in unintentional injury. HOWEVER, YOU WILL EXPERIENCE WHAT EVERYONE ELSE DOES TOO, AND THATS CALLED SLEEP PARALYSIS. You will feel like you cant move or can only move very slowly. This is why you cant open or close your mouth. The dangerous part occurs when you begin to panic and both of your systems, (Symp and ParaSymp) begin to work against one another. You can end up with a large dose of the chemicals that keep you from moving as a reaction to a large dose of adrenaline, which in extreme cases, has resulted in seizures. AS FOR THE DREAM, it may result from a loss of oxygen, like when people snore or end up sleeping on their face. Your brain will try to let you know that something is preventing you from breathing properly, and the way it will tell you potentially, is in the form of a dream. Hope this helps.

  • Its very common to feel in your dreams what your body feels when you're asleep. And just so you know, if you take drugs like speed or ecstasy, it does hurt the jaw. Really bad.
