Is it normal to have a recurring nightmare like this one?

So I have these nightmares where it starts off with me thinking im still trying to fall asleep, then I get either a hot or cold sensation which let's me know that I'm in the dream, either that or none of the lights work when I try to turn them on after I get the sensation (I've been having the dream for so long that even when I'm in it I know the hints that give it away.) So after the sensation something begins to tug on my arm, it moves my limbs around to the point where it starts to yank me off my bed and drag me around my room and pick me up off the floor. In the dream I don't try to fight it cause I get this overwhelming feeling that I can't do anything about it, so I stay limp the whole time, that's not the worst part though, whenever I try to look at what's pulling on me my sight goes dark and my hearing is shattered by what sounds like the noise you hear on the radio when you aren't on a station, the nightmare ends when I crawl out of my room. I called my mother to speak to her about this and she told me a story about how when she was a child something used to pull her off her bed too and still does to this day, I'm really at a loss and lose sleep out of fear that this nightmare will come back to get me.

In dream you have to struggle with it. Even if you are completely powerless you have to fight it. Eventually after some time, you will manage to get an upper hand. Or so it worked for me.

I used to have nightmares, that I had to expose an infiltrator that looked like one of my parents or my brother. It was some entity that caused me pain when I provoked it. I eventually found out that best way to expose it was to call it names or attack it. For some time I always lost the struggle, but after some years I managed to defeat it repeately. And then it never appeared ever since.

If it happens often, and you know you are dreaming when it occurs, you can actually control it a little. I used to have nightmares that kept recurring, until my mother told me, next time I realized I was dreaming, to make the decision for it to happen a different way. And it worked! Now the only nightmares I have are shockers, where it going along fine and then something suddenly happens. Don't know what to do for those.

maybe it's an out-of-body experience, since you mentioned it happens right when you're falling asleep? If so, funny stuff can happen, like hearing noises, feeling paralyzed, floating, etc.

I don't know if it's normal or not. I don't have the power to turn light switches on and off in my dreams.. or anything for that matter. I don't realize i'm dreaming or doing anything until I wake up.

You mentioned you know that you're dreaming when this happens, correct? Well, who says you can't turn that nightmare into a good dream with enough will power? Look up "lucid dreaming", I'm sure you'll find the techniques helpful.
