Is it normal to have a phobia of cows?

I used to have a phobia of cows up until the age of 15. I would scream and cry if I saw one, even if it was 20 metres away behind a fence, and I used to have serious nightmares that I was being chased by cows with huge horns, and I'd wake up sweating and unable to go back to sleep. It was really affecting my life

Cows are big animals and pretty harmless.Today's cows are descended from Aurochs a large ancient wild cow with a bad temper. With crossbreeding and selecting more docile offspring we have the cows of today. But they are big animals and if you are a little kid they can be scary.

I remember years ago I was walking down a county road late at night and I decided I needed a rest. I went over to a fence, sat down, leaned against the fence and fell asleep. I woke up and had that sense of being watched. I turned around and saw these huge faces and large eyes looking at me. I yelled and jumped. They were just cows that saw me and came over out of curiosity. I laugh now but at the time it was startling. :)

      • That's quite a fair point. When I think about it, I'm sure that they are probably more scared of me than I am of them!!

That would have freaked me out big time! Wow, what a great story

It's not a phobia; it's fear based on a very real danger.

In Britain, 17 people were killed by cows in the period 2001-11, and many other people were injured or pursued.

Some of those incidents involved walkers who had dogs with them, which cows see as a danger. Cows with calves are notoriously nervous and defensive.

The CDC estimates that an average of 22 people are killed by cows every year in the USA, and that the majority of those cases were deliberate attacks, not farm accidents:

Cows don't have claws or fearsome teeth and they aren't the most nimble of animals, but they can move pretty damn fast for something that weighs the better part of a tonne, and you really don't want to end up under a herd of them.

    • Cows are assholes. I really have no qualms about eating steak. You don’t even have to provoke them a lot of the time. They just get pissed off and charge.

    That's actually kinda funny.

  • Yes. More people have died from being trampled by cows than from bear attacks. I went to a farm once and almost got attacked by a cow just for walking past it. Cows aren’t always the sweet innocent animals everyone seems to think they are. So it’s quite a logical fear actually. That being said, I still fear bears more. I know it’s not logical because bears are not nearly as populated as cows, but it I’m just more afraid of them for some reason.

    Big pigs were my fear.
When you're small those 300 lbs porkers are scary.

  • Aww, I shouldn't smirk. I'd say it'd be normal to be afraid of them, if you saw one in person (cow?), since they're gigantic.

However, being this cowphobic seems rather abnomral. Imo, they're cute.
