Is it normal to have a panic attack and not realize it?

What is a panic attack and how do you know if you are having one? I was told I had one but I thought I was just having breathing issues. Can you have a panic attack and not feel anxious or is it signs of asthma?

  • I usually get panic attacks. Usually my ears start to ring and I cannot hear anything and I get sensations of dread brought on by loud noises. Usually happens in the middle of the night.

That's exactly what my friend said it's like when he has one. Weird.

I had an anxiety attack a while ago. At least I talked to my friend about it and what I said pretty much he's dealt with. It felt like my heart just dropped or something. I couldn't breath. It was weird. I felt like I was going to faint. My friend says that anything could trigger a panic/anxiety attack. If the simplest of things. He doesn't have asthma so I don't think it has anything to do with that. This isn't really my area of expertise but based on what he said they can happen for no reason.

    Was it noticeable to others?

I think it would have to bd quite noticeable and intense to be a panic attack, otherwise it would just be anxiety.

But isn't anxiety the main part of a panic attack in the first place?

        • Why I asked if you could get one without realizing it.

I don't think so, I would think they're pretty intense. And if you felt nothing then wouldnt it be nothing.

Feeling of fight or flight... when something makes you extremely anxious, you have a sick feeling in your stomach like you will throw up, pass out, light-headedness, depersonalization, tremors... that's how it is for me, I've had them a lot due to anxiety disorders... it's different for some people but roughly those same symptoms... who told you, you had one? It seems like people give out medical names to any mild/slight symptoms these days...

    • Everyone I asked. I was in PE and suddenly started breathing heavily and couldn't stop it. I was struggling to breath and I couldn't slow it down. This was before we started exercise. It took me awhile for my breathing to normalize.

My friends became angry when I did it and kept telling me to stop it since it was annoying. Not that I was trying to do it.

I told my parents they said it was a panic attack and so did everyone else I asked. It happened pretty randomly and it didn't hurt it just felt like I couldn't breath. My breathing eventually went back to normal.

I breathe like that when I get panic attacks. Was something bothering you before the "attack" happened? did it get worse when your friends told you to stop? I ask that because getting angry at someone having a panic attack is the worse possible thing you can do.

        • No I tried to force it to stop on my own and it wouldn't work. My friends did not make it worse but they were not sympathetic about it either. I remember we were told we were not going to run that day. I usually prefer running but we didn't get to. I just felt kind of bad and annoyed I couldn't stop it but I was not really anxious.

Yeah, I don't think you had a panic attack. I have no idea what it could be though.
