Is it normal to have a low opinion of the welfare system these days?

I am not trying to judge anyone, and there is a reason we have the welfare system. There are people who really DO need food stamps, free healthcare, government housing, etc., and I am okay with that. However, when I say I have a low opinion of it, I mean: A)those who have all these kids in order to get welfare, B)illegal immigrants, also most of whom have a bunch of kids, C)people who WON'T at least try to find jobs, and D)people who have expensive clothes, smart phones, fancy cars, yet they get food stamps and other free stuff from the government. I worked at a retail store and we had a lot of customers with these EBT (food stamp) cards. Some of them had other items too and requested separate transactions because of this. We did not scoff at them, but this made it take longer for us to check them out and for them to get out of the store. Welfare is supposed to be a temporary thing, for people who hit hard times or really need it. It is unfair that there are so many people who abuse the system these days. Taxpayers and those who work for a living end up paying for such people. Again, I am not trying to be judgmental, but is it normal to think the welfare system has been given a bad name?

Rich people take Advantage of the system all the time, they don't pay their fair share either, atleast the poor have a good reason for ripping off the system.

yes and in the middle who gets screwed middle class poeple as they drop everything the rich poeple dont pay and the poor poeple cant pay in our laps . Its a messed up system becuase everyone ends up running out on thier taxes . so we are all going to be ran into the dirt as the rich will sneak away leaving the poor and the middle class to fend for themselves .

Yes, i agree with you. the whole money system is screwed up, it leaves the people in the middle hurting just as much as the poor. Most persons believe that people on welfare do not pay taxes, thats not true, everytime they buy something in their state they pay the tax.

Yes, I think they need to say forget wellfare I think they need to get the poor poeple decent jobs so they are not poor. I think they should give middle class and poor all the same benifits I think they should lower taxes so we are not all crushed into the dirt with these unreasonable tax rates and I think they should offer poeple and businesses to stay and bring work so we are not so poor . No one is doing good right now the poor or middle class or the rich as the poeple with the big money say we are running to some were cheaper . The poor poeple have little to pay and the middle class can barely support themselves They need to make taxes very low so we could get some jobs than everyone will want to give us jobs becuase it wont cost nothing to hire citezens . middle class can barley support thier own selves the poor are pretty screwed to begin with and the rich can just choose to leave to somewere cheaper why we lose the jobs becuase no one wants to pay to hire all these poeple when instead of 2 dollors extra its 20 dollars extra and now everyone gone and we thier is no money left in the potof gold we are supposedly suppose to have .

This is not an easy topic, nor do i believe it is going to be an easy fix. The rich are the ones who are in power, and if they had it their way, all middle class and poor persons would be in bondage serving them on their hands and knees. They are greedy spoiled bastards, who can pay more in taxes, and could claim less loop holes on their taxes, but, no, they say that it's not fair! I say they should tell that to the poor who are living in the streets with 3 kids, or so....

There are exceptions to the rule, but for the most part, rich people do pay their fair share. It is the poor who don't pay their share. Look at all of the people on welfare who receive money from the government for doing absolutely nothing - it is ridiculous!

I've always been fairly liberal-leaning, and I know good, hard working people who genuinely need the government assistance they get.

BUT after working in the gas station industry for three years, and seeing the vast numbers of people who abuse the hell out of the system, I think it absolutely needs to change. People regularly use food stamps to buy (literally) piles of junk food; turn in in-complete job applications so they can meet their "applied to jobs" quota for government assistance while making sure they conveniently don't' get the job; deliberately having kids when they can't afford to, for various idiotic reasons. It's ridiculous.

The system is corrupt and it needs reform, but change can be a hard thing to start.

This reminds me of when I was a kid. My family was poor and on welfare. There were kids at school broker than my family, yet they had cell phones, mp3 players, nicer clothes, nicer shoes, and always had cash on them. I was angry at the people abusing the system. I'm 24 now and almost everyone on my block is milking the system somehow, yet it no longer bothers me. There's always going to be people doing this, so try not to let it bother you. As long as you're working and making an honest living, you can secure something for yourself that they won't have: a future.
