Is it normal to have a jealous coworker?

Is it normal to have a coworker tell lies and stories to other coworkers about you because of his jealousy towards you? Hes spreading around vicous rumours about me at my work place, includeing to management. Its gotten totaly out of hand and he has a few dedicated folowers who believe every word. Its become an uncomfortable situation for me and when i confront him, he increases his backstabbing lies about me. I hear murmurs from other coworkers from time to time and its gotten unbelieveable. I believe he does this because of his low self esteme and insecurities. I tell my girlfriend and friends about the situation and they all say...don't worry about it, hes a jerk stop thinking so much and stop worrying. Well its starting to really raise my stress level; any suggestions and help would be much appreciated.

  • First: document EVERYTHING - what was said, to whom, when, where...how you know... and keep documenting.

Second: stop the psychology. He is willfully poisoning your workplace & reputation which is an act of abuse, harassment & hostility. Label the behaviour for what it is. It is impossible for you to be able or responsible to explain it. Just label it for what it is: abuse.

Go to your manager. Itemize the behaviour. Tell them you want it to stop. Ask what they will do. Keep documenting, and do not throw it out. You may need it later.

This is corporate bullying! There is much information online about it. However, I
Think you definitely need to tell this person, very calmly, that you are not putting up with that behavior, and it needs to stop. If they don't, go to HR. And definitely document Everything!

I'm in the same situation, but with a girl at work. I find that laughing off their stupid lies works, and acting as happy as possible can really break them into self destruction. Good luck!
