Is it normal to have a cufew of 5pm at fourteen years old?

I have never had any sort of curfew which is why I find it so unreasonable that one of my friends has a curfew of 5 o'clock every day no matter what the reason to be out later. This isn't just for school nights or in winter when it gets dark earlier, it is all year round even during the summer holidays. Her mum doesn't get home until 11 most nights so it has nothing to do with spending time with her. I am allowed to stay out as late as I want even on school nights as long as I have a safe way of getting home. We live in a very safe area of Sydney and she is a responsible teenager who would never drink, do drugs or anything that her mother wasn't happy with. She can not be out later or she is in a lot of trouble. Is this a normal curfew?

yes its normal to have a curfew. just because your parents dont care if you get raped and murdered, that doesnt mean her parents want the same for their children. and btw, i dont actually know of any safe places in Sydney lol. you will learn that when you grow up lol.

    • there is nothing wrong with having a curfew its just that 5pm seems excessive. Sydney is safe as long as you're not in the city at night. Thats where all the creepy perverts are haha :) overall Sydney is a safe place

Seems strict, but maybe part of the reason why she's a responsible teenager is bc her mom keeps tight reins on her.

I always found that my parents kept very tight reigns on me, I never really left the house without them at all. It felt horribly restrictive, and I was constantly jealous of all the other kids who had a reasonable level of freedom. I genuinely don't understand why parents sometimes feel the need to keep such a tight hold of their kids. Surely the best way for kids to grow up is to let them go out and have fun, and let them learn their own lessons and set their own limits.

I dont think either are normal. 5pm seems unreasonable, i think she needs her freedom. but i dont think its sensible to not have any curfew at all. i'd say a curfew of around 8-9is reasonable for a 14 year old, depending on if its a school night or summer holidays or whatever.

I never had a curfew.. because I wasn't really allowed out until I was 17. My mom is psycho.. I WISH I was allowed to go out and do whatever I wanted until 5pm.

it sounds more like a punishment than regular rules.

yes, that is excessive in my opinion. if it were only on school nights, I could see that, although strict nonetheless. but on weekends and summer too?? I almost question her mother's mental state.

Thats exactly what i thought. Then again that is no where near as bad as one of my other friends who is not allowed out of the house at all, ever! Her mum is extremely paranoid about everything. She thinks the wind is evil and out to get her. I feel sorry for that friend but she sneaks out a fair bit anyway so its not as strict in a way
