Is it normal to hate xmas as most people celebrate it?

I've decided I'm just not going to do family xmas celebrations ever again. Yesterday I was an unwilling participant in a festival of greed and waste and I'm not going to do it again.
Ten people ate enough food to supply a starving third world village for at least a week and exchanged gifts which were unneeded and in some cases unwanted. I can't stand it any more.

Next year I'll be volunteering at my local community space xmas lunch for people with nowhere else to go. I'll spend time with my family at summer solstice and all my gifts instead of just some will be donations to third world communities for clean drinking water, medical supplies and so on.

  • I never understood this. If some people can't enjoy something then those that work to be able to eat like that shouldn't be allowed? People unable to eat is sad and all but what do you expect others to do? Fly off in their helicopters and parachute food down to starving people in other countries?

I mean, I am sure you have a home, right? I am also sure you could fit ten or so people in that home if it's small. Sure you'd be sleeping next to eachother in the living room but it's possible, so why not take in some homeless people?

There's no need to personally deliver food to starving people, it's easy to donate online to eg World Vision and they will get it to people who need it and that's what part of my gifts to my daughter and grandkids were.

I do have a rented home but I could also be made homeless at any time. I don't feel any obligation to try & solve all the world's problems myself or any guilt that I can't, I just do what I can to help others less fortunate than I am: do you?

And by the way, for all you people out there who think christians have a monopoly on ethics and helping others, I'm an atheist.

I find it very interesting that the people who've voted against OP's post haven't bothered to explain why, just voted no .. maybe there are no valid reasons for liking xmas? The more people I talk to the more people I find who are totally sick of the whole thing.

I keep remembering an anti-war slogan from the 60's and changing it to: "What if there was xmas and nobody came?" (It used to say "a war".)
