Is it normal to hate when people say kids should find a job?

I noticed when kid, usually 12-15 years old asks on the internet how to convince their parents to buy tem something all those smartasses start saying "get a job you lazy brat" or "stop whining and get job yourself"
That's fucking bullshit.
In most of countries kids can't get a job at all. It's not like in those pretty American movies where kid can walk dogs or clean cars without a problem. That's not how it people would just tell works. If kid wanted to get a job here people would tell them to go fuck yourself.
I'm 17 now and I can't get a job since I'm still in school and people won't let kid do a job.
It really pisses me off when people say kid should get a job as it is that easy IIN?

Well fuck, if you live in Slovakia then tell them that you live in Slovakia and they don't know what they're talking about. In my country, the US, it is possible for a minor to work odd jobs, at least. But if the criticism isn't relevant to you, tell them. That'd be like my saying I can't lose weight and being told to get off my ass and go for a jog. Well if I don't have legs, that advice isn't even relevant to me. I'm starving, "go fishing", well I live in the middle of the desert! Irrelevant.

I'm not actually a legless desert dweller. Those were just examples.

  • "Children" should not have jobs, that is why there are laws which hopefully prevent child-labour.

However, many teenagers want to be adults and have adult responsibilities, so why not allow them to do the most basic adult thing and get a job. It is amazingly empowering for a teen to have a job and their own money which did not come from an allowance their parents doled out to them.

Of course, the availability of simple jobs is limited in some areas of the world. In the Commonwealth countries it is quite normal for teenagers to seek employment. I'm not sure what it is like in Slovakia, your economy is probably quite different and that would have a huge impact on the culture regarding jobs for youth.

  • Well, I'm 19 and I do see where you are coming from. The US economy is still really sluggish...the GDP is growing at 1% per year, which does not create enough jobs for everyone to be able to hop into the workforce with ease. Outsourcing is big, and when companies exploit illegal immigrants for labor it really kills jobs. Even college grads are having a tough time finding a job.

However, ambition and dedication are still qualities that are just as important as are how cheap you are to employ and what your education is. Furthermore, there are certain fields such as customer service (restaurants, etc) where the businesses want employees who can relate to the customers(so, not illegal immigrants who don't speak English, even if they are willing to work for 1$ per hour). Also, minimum wage jobs don't really require experience. So you don't have to be a college grad with years of working experience to get a job at McDonalds.

So if an employer sees that you are committed and willing to do whatever it takes to get and keep a job, you will get a job. Especially if you are a relate-able person when it comes to customer service, so that you can reel in customers for your company.

So yeah, its tough out there. Companies don't really prefer young people. But I worked as a waiter when I was 16, and the way I got the job is by pestering the hiring manager over and over, so he knew that I really wanted the job. The reason why older people are so crotchety about it is because when it comes to minimum wage jobs where you don't need any experience or education, the way you get a job is by committing to finding a job. There aren't many out there, but if you keep trying you will get one. Simply giving up because its too hard to find a job is kind of being a bitch.

Where are you from? I suppose I might be able to understand your annoyances with that under the right circumstances...

You have to understand though that where I am from, and probably most of the people who are saying this, it is not uncommon to be able to find work at that age. There is this mindset of, 'I did it, so if you want to bad enough, you can too!'

    • I live in Slovakia, in capital city where most of houses are flats so I can't do any of those things mentioned above.

      • Even though I assumed you live in the US, my points are still valid. The whole global economy is doing poorly, and outsourcing as well as exploitation of cheap illegal labor are prevalent everywhere. Also, there are plenty of jobs for you to get in Slovakia. Apparently Slovakia's economy is growing at over 3% per year, so its actually easier for you to get a job than it is for me to get a job. Quit bitching heheh.

        • Actually it's 0,7%. Learn your facts before you play smartass.
Also 15% of people here are unemployed and that makes it harder too.

          • If what you say is true, then I guess you win the contest, congratulations. Its harder for you to get a job than it is for me to get a job so I should feel sorry for you. I was wrong. You have the right to complain about what you don't have. Maybe you can complain to God so he will give you money so you can buy your xbox, since you deserve it.

            • I'm not complaining about not getting a job I'm complaining about people being ignorant against other parts of world just because it's different where they live in.
I don't want xbox and I'm an atheist so no thanks.

I've been working since I was 13. I cleaned houses, mowed lawns, baby sat kids, raked leaves, painted fences, painted rooms, removed carpeting, installed carpeting, helped out at a realtors office archiving papers and keeping the place looking nice, worked on plumbing, roofed houses, framed houses, remodeled homes, built barbed wire fencing, done custom industrial painting and a lot more all before my 18th birthday.

To say that a minor can't get a job is a joke.

You can apply to work at a fast food restaurant, work for a clothing store part time, markets and grocers are always looking for help, house cleaning, baby sitting, helping move furniture, or any number of other things. If you sincerely wanted to put money in your pocket you'd find a way.

The economy isn't the same as it was when you were a kid, though. Where I live, at least, a lot of people can't afford to hire people, even kids, to do those things. Kids who want to work for the businesses you mentioned have to compete with adults for those positions, now, because the job market is so poor.

Well Violet seeing as I'm only 19.....

    • I've been trying to find at least some kind of easy job since I was 12 and never had luck. We live in flat so I can't clean houses, people around here all have kids above age 14, there are no fences, nobody here I asked wanted kid to paint wall, people don't even want to change their carpet etc. It's just different when you live in big city where people live in flats so they don't have garden or own roof.

I tried applying to work at fast food but nobody wanted someone without experience.

I sincerely want to work but no matter how hard I try I just can't.

You are correct. Even so my father still told me that when I was 12. He said "Well get a job"! I asked him how to get a job. He would get upset since I tried making up all these get rich quick schemes. Yet would get angry when I was 14 and would not stop trying to get one. It also is not fair since kids with business families get to have jobs earlier. Which everyone I new had family owned businesses. So they got all this money from jobs and I was not allowed to work. Which was unfair and stupid. My dad said it was ok when he was a kid to be 10 and toss papers. Now you have to be 18 and usually have a driver license which is complete shit. Why I do not think labor laws actually help children. They just crippled them making them more dependent on parents. So a lot of these 18 year olds do not have anything on record they can use to get a job. They can not say "I tossed papers when I was 10".

I'm 23 and in the same boat. I don't have much work experience because I've been focusing on school, but I can't get work experience unless I HAVE work experience... x.x It's very frustrating.

      • Go back to those fast food restaurants and do whatever you need to do that will convince the employers that you are willing to do anything to get the job. Hang around the store constantly, do some research about the store positions and explain to the employer that you would be a great cashier because you are honest and you are good at counting, or that you would make a great cook because you cook at home. You CAN get a job. Good luck.

Seems a lot of laws are aiming to do that now. They think they are helping but they do not help anyone. They just make them more dependent on parents and the system.

I have been working a real job since age 14. Not walking dogs or any of that jack. I know depending on where you live that is not possible. Have you thought about selling weed?

  • i think that when people say that they mean that you should make an effort look at business's like facebook is was created by young teens, also in the uk there was a kid who started making jams following his grandmothers recipies and he's made it big his product is in the major supermarkets now basically anything is possible if you want it bad enough you will try hard if you try hard you will eventually succeed

meh. I'm an artist, people have been telling me all my life to get a job. If I had a real job I'd have no time to do what I love doing. Don't let it bother you, especially considering the global financial crisis and progress of technology in the workplace has cut down the amount of work going. Its natural for people to tell the unemployed youth to get a job, but not natural for them to be disrespectful about it, unless you are really being slack and taking advantage of what privileges you are afforded.

I've had a job since 11. Paper route, then doing surveys on the phone, then dry cleaning and now pharmacy. It was frustrating at times but everything would just fall in place. I guess I was just lucky I dk

You CAN get a job at age 13 here, part time at least. It's not hard to do. Most kids work at the newsagents or some sort of small shop where they're cool with kids. I got a part time job when I was 17. Yes it was easy. I think the only fucking bullshit here is you.
